Why the GOP tax bill is depressing to me.

Our president has a 35% approval rate.
The GOP has a 24% approval rate.
Congress has a 16% approval rate.

And they're pushing through a tax bill that has 29% support.

This makes no sense.

In a democracy, you are supposed to push for stuff that at least has a chance to be popular during non-emergency times, especially if you are insanely unpopular.

So, how does this make sense? Because the GOP, particularly the House GOP, believes it has properly insulated itself from democratic punishments (i.e. being voted out of power).
  • They have gerrymandered the House, and the Senate favors small, rural states.
  • Campaign finance restrictions have been destroyed by GOP judges to give the wealthy more control over candidates and politicians.
By all accounts -- we're looking at a wave election in 2018 if things continue the way they're going. And even after a wave it's still not remotely clear if Democrats can even barely take back the majority in the House, and they almost certainly won't in the Senate.

I think this is all pretty depressing and antithetical to how a representative, responsive government is supposed to act.

What makes no sense is your stupid sentence. We aren't a democracy. How many times do you need to be told that? Perhaps your denial in accepting that reality is why you're such a depressed individual???

I know the pain. Living through 8 years of Obama was horrific. But Trump is managing very well to overturn most of it and while dems focus on tweets, he is getting the courts filled with young conservative judges.

False equivalence. It wasn't polling as bad as this monstrosity is. And how is it polling now?

Obama was above water in his approval rating. The Democrats had a higher approval rating -- I believe it was around 40%, which is good for a political party.

And both Obama and the law itself are now very popular, by today's standards. Both are well above 50%.

That's kind of how a democracy is supposed to work.

I don't get it either, but we do need to lower our Corp tax rate for sure.

I have an alternative theory. Republicans believe the popularity polls will come around once people see/feel the real impacts of the tax reform package instead of just hearing how bad it will be from the demagogues of the left. In other words, Republican really believe this is best for the country.

That brings us to our democracy. The way our system works is that we elect representatives to make prudent judgments for us, not to mechanically react to our whims as evidenced by poll results.

If democrats really believed deficit reduction through the tax code was the top priority, they'd embrace a plan that increases rates on lower income groups. A regressive tax would raise revenue more effectively than a progressive one.

Agreed -- I probably would have lowered it about half of what the current plan would have done.
