Net Neutrality: You should be concerned

Net Neutrality is the guiding principle of the internet. It preserves our right to browse freely and communicate openly over the internet.

Net Neutrality enables and protects free speech.

It forces ISPs to provide us with open networks and disallows any discrimination against an application or content which rides over that network. Just as your cellular network shouldn’t decide who you can or cannot call, ISPs shouldn’t interfere with what you can or cannot do on the internet.

If you haven't been following along, Net neutrality is the idea that all traffic on the Internet should be treated equally. That means your broadband provider, which controls your access to the Internet, can't block or slow down the services or applications you use over the Web. It also means your Internet service provider -- whether it's a cable company or telephone service -- can't create so-called fast lanes that force content companies like Netflix to pay an additional fee to deliver their content to customers faster.

These huge companies will profit by providing better speed to the sites that pay them more money. We have no right to know which sites paid for faster speed. All the money and power of the internet will be in the hands of a few powerful corporations.

Just think of the consequences for a second......start ups and small businesses will have to compete against the power of the big dogs that paid money for faster traffic. Service and options will slowly fade away due to an uneven competing environment.

The more sinister part could be the billionaires with an agenda will buy majority stakes in these ISPs and give faster speeds to sites aligned with their beliefs. This could happen on both sides of the political fence. And you will never know who paid or what group of sites are being favored. Talk about picking winners and losers.....GEEZZZZ

Can anyone tell me why even do this? How does this benefit the internet or us in any way?

This is a political topic, BRC. Your OP is misguided. A free internet is better for innovation, efficient use of resources, and competition than a government controlled net neutrality internet. Net neutrality hands even more control over the internet to the googles and facebooks of the world. That's why they're so keen on it.

Repealing net neutrality is horrible for the end user. The only winner is service providers.

The whole point of abolishing Net Neutrality is for service providers to charge extra for things that we used to get for free to make more money. Any other excuse is laughable.

I'm getting really tired of big companies monetizing everything. I wish we would all start supporting small businesses and starve the behemoths out.

Think of it this way. What if your ISP is owned by a media company that has certain political views and they decide to throttle down the speed to sites they don't like or they decide to charge those sites more to distribute their content? It may not happen but I'm seeing a lot of things happening lately that I never thought would happen in this country. There is zero reason to get rid of Net Neutrality and a ton of reasons to keep it. Those who control the media, control the message people hear. Let's just not allow anyone to control it.

How?

How does the end consumer lose with net neutrality?

How do corporations win with net neutrality?

or are you supporting net neutrality? You have it backwards.

Net Neutrally is not tribal.

Every site should be treated the same by ISP's is not a political side or argument.

The NFL hired 2 of Reid's OC’s to be head coaches in the last 3 years. One is already in the Super Bowl this year with Foles as his QB. If any NFL team needs a coach and Reid is available, they will hire him over any person on the face of the earth, except for Bellicheck.

How does the end consumer lose with net neutrality? Basic view - people use Netflix so the ISP charges Netflix a bunch more to distribute their content. Netflix then passes along those charges to the consumer and probably adds a chunk more blaming the ISP.

How do corporations win with net neutrality? The ISP makes more money charging content providers more to provide their content.

Abolishing net neutrality, I edited my original post to include that.

I work at a large ISP provider and have seen numerous videos from the C-Level employees trying to explain why this is a good thing. It’s not a good thing an the majority of employees at this ISP agree it’s not a good thing.

Interestingly, Pai worked at Verizon years ago, which has to be some sort of conflict of interest. He’s advocating for regulation that will benefit major ISP’s while probably increasing for all normal users.

Corporate greed is a nasty thing.

You have it backwards. You support net neutrality.

It is important to know what side of the fence you are on. Net neutrality is what is currently in place to stop ISPs from holding bandwidth hostage.

And if Netflix or YouTube don’t follow the rules the ISP’s put in place, we very well may see throttled speeds until they get their way (and money.) It’s happened in the past with select companies, now it may happen on a larger scale.
