Net Neutrality: You should be concerned

Net Neutrality is the guiding principle of the internet. It preserves our right to browse freely and communicate openly over the internet.

Net Neutrality enables and protects free speech.

It forces ISPs to provide us with open networks and disallows any discrimination against an application or content which rides over that network. Just as your cellular network shouldn’t decide who you can or cannot call, ISPs shouldn’t interfere with what you can or cannot do on the internet.

If you haven't been following along, Net neutrality is the idea that all traffic on the Internet should be treated equally. That means your broadband provider, which controls your access to the Internet, can't block or slow down the services or applications you use over the Web. It also means your Internet service provider -- whether it's a cable company or telephone service -- can't create so-called fast lanes that force content companies like Netflix to pay an additional fee to deliver their content to customers faster.

These huge companies will profit by providing better speed to the sites that pay them more money. We have no right to know which sites paid for faster speed. All the money and power of the internet will be in the hands of a few powerful corporations.

Just think of the consequences for a second......start ups and small businesses will have to compete against the power of the big dogs that paid money for faster traffic. Service and options will slowly fade away due to an uneven competing environment.

The more sinister part could be the billionaires with an agenda will buy majority stakes in these ISPs and give faster speeds to sites aligned with their beliefs. This could happen on both sides of the political fence. And you will never know who paid or what group of sites are being favored. Talk about picking winners and losers.....GEEZZZZ

Can anyone tell me why even do this? How does this benefit the internet or us in any way?

If you paid attention to what I've posted, particularly in the more involved one in DC, you'd see how I address that problem. Instead, treating it as a public utility is not going to expand that either. Remember MaBell was the only choice in town for decades too. You don't see that anymore in phones.

My choices have expanded. There's been three choices here since year 2000 and now there's 4.

Some markets are not going to be able to offer the exact same choices. Markets in general have become more and more fragmented. It's not always a macro set-up.

Thank you for proving my point on not being able to take the heat by having a political thread in the Lounge. I see that you're an avid lurker. Otherwise, you wouldn't have an opinion on it.

1) Net neutrality codified goes back to the early 2000s.

2) The basic, fundamental premise of net neutrality has been followed for as long as there has been an internet.

That's hilarious. I find those same traits here in the lounge quite often.

Surely you realize that she only used that word because that's the word the person she was talking to used. She was reflecting Bigjosh's vulgarity, not being spontaneously vulgar herself. Bigjosh of the Lounge, btw. I can't speak to his demeanor or his skin color though.

It was madness! I remember those days back in 2014 when you had to plug in a different cable for each website you wanted to visit. It was horrible!

That that was even missed by him says all that is needed to know, about someone accusing a whole group of people as ignorant. Classic projection.

I remember when Princess Diana died, how long it took to find photos on the internet it was so clunky and slow.

We caught providers throttling data to competitors, not expanding their infrastructure using the government subsidies they were provided to do so with, as well as many other nefarious business practices. Which is exactly why Net Neutrality was enacted in the first place, dope.
