The Death of Stalin

Holy shit. A political comedy that actually looks like it isn't LCD SJW leftist propaganda.

It's finally showing in Fargo tomorrow. I will be seeing this.

I've heard it's excellent, but some people I know have said they could have been a lot more heavy with the satire. It's Stalinism, after all, and if this is the kind of movie you're making, there should almost be a joke every 10 seconds because of how ridiculous and tragically silly that time was. In any case, I'm looking forward to it.

It wasn't bad, except my Ianucci standards. If anything, it comes off a bit sterile. It's not funny enough to be a farce. It soft sells the real mayhem too much to be a tragedy. It's a dark comedy that comes off as a stageplay and more of an exercise than a finished product.

It's going for the comedy in horrific surroundings of something like Fargo [the movie], lots of killing while the central characters jockey for power. But it's like there's a layer of gauze between the viewer and screen tempering the experience.

Probably the most telling thing is, you'll probably spend the whole time in 'Tom Cruise mode.' You know that thing where, no matter the film or setting, you're thinking 'hey, that's Tom Cruise!!' [Tropic Thunder excepted]. That's what you'll be thinking about all the characters. Hey! That's Steve Buscemi! Hey! That's George Bluth!

I was kind of shocked to see Michael Palin get a decent role. Last I heard he was doing travel documentaries. Has he even been in a movie since Brazil, much less played a prominent character in one?
