that divides up the cap hit between the current year and the next
Isn't your calculation correct only if it is the final year of the contract? The difference between salary cap# and base# is the amount of bonus this year. If a player has 3 more years left on his contract then it would be 3 times that bonus amount since bonuses are spread out evenly on the length of the contract.

Wasn't there another article, maybe even by Teicher, about 2-3 weeks ago that said if the Chiefs cut the 5-6 most likely candidates it would COST them 30 million. Not save, but cost them that money. Anybody remember that?

[EDIT] unless, there are SEVERAL more years remaining on their contract in which case we have to account for the pro-rated portion of the following years as well. [EDIT]

So, if we cut Eric Hicks we instantly save 2.9 million in base and half the leftovers (approx 800K) making a total savings of 3.7 million, and next year we would have an 800K hit against us. I expect this will probably happen since it's a big savings that can be better spent on Allen's new contract.

Cutting Sims saves us about 2.5 Million and next year we would get hit for about 500K.

But there are already some big savings with people that are already gone.

Willie Roaf: 4.2 Million in savings THIS year, and a 600K hit next
William Bartee: 1.6 Million in savings THIS year, and a 200K hit next

Then there are some cool things we can do with restructures on contracts like Surtain's. We can give him a new 4 year deal with a bonus around 9, and a low base for this year and next. Cut a couple million off of his number and keep him around for a few more years. We wouldn't want to restructure Trent because he's in his last year (most likely) and giving him a long contract means TROUBLE next year when we have to cut him and take a big hit for two years. Better for him to get a big check this year and retire. We'll only take a 1 million hit next year and another 1 million hit the following year.

The Chiefs are in GREAT shape going into free agency. Good enough that we might be able to lose a free agent or two and replace them with some big namers. Good enough that Jerrod Allen is going to get a 7 year deal... Hopefully with a clause that includes drinking and driving consequences.

What? You're kidding right?

Reggie White went to the Packers before free agency started.

Terrel Owens was TRADED to the Eagles. He certainly didn't help the Cowboys.

The only time Deion Sanders was a free agent was with the Redskins and that team finished 8-8.

Deion was a free agent when he went to the Niners and won a ring....then the Cowboys and won a ring...

Yea your right.....he was injured that year but came back strong in the SB. He did however play a huge part in helping them win in the regular season.

Plan B free agency started after the 1992 season and went on for two years.

Both Reggie White and Deion Sanders were Plan B.

The current free agency system started in 1995. Name someone in the modern era.

And he was traded for.

If you want to trade for a player, great, I've got no problem with that.

But big name free agents are Fool's Gold.
