Next Gen Kindle Fire

Anyone know anything about this? I think I want.
Amazon’s New Kindle Could Come in September
By Andrei C. | Jul 17, 2012 Add a comment .Posted In Android, Games & Gadgets, Mobile Devices
Reports are that Amazon’s new Kindle Fire will be unveiled in September.

The new device is expected to come with an improved display, both in terms of resolution (1280 x 800 pixels) and PPI (216), all on the same screen size. It will also be lighter, thinner and feature a built-in camera, although it’s not clear if it’ll be front-facing or not).

All of these details come from AllThingsD.

I’m betting the new Fire will include an improved chip, maybe a Tegra 3 Quad-Core.

The New York Times says the device “could compete more directly with the iPad, according to a developer briefed on Amazon’s plans who did not want to be identified talking about unannounced products.”

Ironically, the Kindle Fire’s strongest feature isn’t within the device itself: It’s Amazon Prime membership, which for just $79 a year provides access to a huge collection of movies, TV shows and books, plus upgraded shipping.

10-inch Kindle Fire tipped as Amazon new iPad challenge imminent
Chris Davies, Jul 16th 2012

Amazon’s larger Kindle Fire is still in the pipeline, sources insist, scaling up from the existing 7-inch slate as Apple reportedly scales down to tweener tablet levels. A namedrop in the same NYT article that threw further weight against the iPad mini rumors, according to unnamed developers the retailer is pushing ahead with what’s tipped to be a roughly 10-inch variant of the Kindle Fire, bringing the challenge to Apple’s new iPad.

While Amazon spokespeople unsurprisingly declined to comment on the newspaper’s chatter, the idea of a new, larger Kindle Fire isn’t exactly new. Even before the original Kindle Fire was revealed, speculation had it that Amazon was working on not one but two devices: a cheap, small model (which went on to hit virtual shelves at $199) and a larger, more capable version.

That second model never arrived, however, with talk that Amazon encountered issues with components and performance, among other things. However, going by the insider whispers, that work might be culminating again in a larger device due later in 2012.

Exact hardware details are in short supply, but Android is undoubtedly running – albeit heavily reskinned for Amazon’s content-selling purposes – under the hood, and a screen sized more akin to the 9.7-inch current iPad is likely.

Any launch is most likely to take place alongside the second-generation 7-inch Kindle Fire, which as rumor would have it is due in Q3 with a 1280 x 800 display. Amazon is also tipped to be working on a Kindle smartphone.

cool ... i hope they don't add too much to it though. That will just raise the price up to the Ipad price.

just make a 10" kindle fire and keep it inexpensive

not going to play Call of Duty on it or edit video.

for me it's just a mobile convenience item ...

1. large screen 10+ inch
2. long battery so i don't have to worry about recharging all the time
3. full browsing (ie flash &big enough screen) i hate not be able to visit a site or see something
4. ebook (another reason for big screen, less page turning)
5. few flash games for boredom (angry birds or silly crap like that)
6. some picture taking/showing
7. quick and simple access to email/text/twitter

i think the current kindle fire does all these things, except the 10" screen.

100% agree. I want it for my Prime content and the points you list here. No Ipad redux.

I think they will be surprised about how much market share they could grab if they keep it simple and the price down.

I think most people don't use half of the features in an Ipad and just want a basic device.

I don't believe that makes much sense. Considering iPad sales vs. Kindle Fire sales, it would leave one to believe that the overwhelming majority want their tablet to do more, not less. The public has been offered countless cheap tablets, and all of them have flopped.

The Kindle's popularity and sales are directly related to the point in time when it became a full functioning tablet, instead of just an e-reader. That's what people want, and that's the direction they'll take it.

I have a Fire. I love it for reading and despise it for pretty much everything else. The Android system it's on is wonky and the battery life sucks. The size is great, and consuming Amazon content on it is good too.

Having to restart it to watch Netflix, or the level of something like burn in on the screen when I switch screens isn't. Android sucks. Whenever I open the web it restores a tab to a site I closed out of 3 months ago. Always.

Then my company switched from the Inspire4G to the iPhone. Now all I do on the kindle is read, my iPhone is better for everything else. Including watching movies on the way smaller screen.

I would get an iPad over the Fire for everything I'd do on it except read. For that, the size and backlit screen (while in bed) make the Fire perfect for me.

Huh? Kindle Fire has been out for less than a year. They haven't introduced a 10 inch model yet. Let's look at market share next year and the year after and see.

I have the Fire and hacked it on the 3rd day. I'm currently running Ice Cream Sandwich and I can't image needing another tablet for a long time.

It does everything I need.

The Kindle Fire is the 6th generation of Kindle now. And each generation has seen it get more complicated and more "iPad like". With the Kindle Fire, they even dropped their e-ink display, which was what made Kindle a better e-reader in the first place. They did all this to allow for more tablet capabilities.

And while the Kindle Fire has sold better than previous models, it still hasn't been as successful as Amazon hoped. To address that, they're increasing the next gen Kindle's capabilities, in hopes of making it more of an iPad competitor. They're not going to simplify it to keep it cheap, they're going the opposite direction. iPad has shown that price isn't the determining factor in choosing a tablet for the overwhelming majority.

Yup. Honestly, my main complaint about the Fire is that the software's pretty clunky. In terms of hardware, it does just fine. That said, anyone who is looking for a real 7" Android tab these days shouldn't even consider anything other than the Nexus 7.
