Alex Smith to ask for release

http://tracking.si.com/2013/01/28/al...?sct=obnetwork

If no draft picks are involved, does that change your opinion on bringing him in?

Draft pick, Smith, Stanzi(?) as your QB's in camp.

If I'm a GM trying to build the best team I can, I have no problem giving Alex Smith a try for a 4th rounder and letting him compete to be the starter. If Geno can't beat him out, then we at least have a guy. I don't want to go the Geno route without some capable backup that can win games. I'd be fine with Jason Campbell as well, but haven't heard his name tossed around at all.
This is pretty much my stance. Geno and Alex and battle it out. Win-Win IMO.

I can't believe there are people advocating for Alex Smith. This guy was about to get booted from the Nfl as a bust. Smh

Well guess what? We dont have control. If Smith is a bad egg, then our FO should be able to sniff it out. If he is a serviceable guy according to the powers that be that have proven themselves to know more than you and I, then he will be here if available, more than likely. You and I going back and forth about who is a better back up option doenst matter.

Im personally getting mentally prepared for us getting Smith via trade because we need a serviceable guy to be our QB and mentor for rookie QB coming. Whether he starts or not I dont know, neither do you.

BTW, I love how everyone points out the way past instead of what is currently going on. What have you done for me lately doenst apply in this case apparently.

Htismage, let me change the direction of this a bit. Say Jason Campbell comes in here as a free agent and the chiefs still draft Geno to start. Like I said, I'd be thrilled with this possibility. What happens if Geno just isn't THE guy?

If you don't think the GM of each of those teams wouldn't still draft a QB, then you are nuts. Nobody is going to give him the reins without having a guy to develop as well. Then, he could be Matt Flynn all over again.
Oh they'll still draft a QB.

In the middle rounds.

Basically, you're banking your season (or 2 or 3) on Alex Smith.

The guy you drafted is a roll of the dice.

I want my veteran backup to be the contingency plan to my drafted QB.

If you bring Alex Smith, your contingency plan is the drafted QB.

That's just the reality of the modern NFL. If they bring Alex Smith in here, he will be the starter. Period.

We won't be drafting a QB high and having a "competition". That is a coach-speak-fueled fantasy.
If you are correct, and it is an either/or situation, then give me Geno. And while I would rather get Alex on the "released from the 49ers route", I would still prefer to have Alex for a 4th, than the 10th or 12th best QB out of the draft class.

I am all for having a legit QB competition. If ran correctly, it won't set the team back... and probablly make the team better. The last four seasons have shown us what happens when someone is handed the keys with no threat to his job.

What have you done for me lately absolutely DOES apply.

People want to bring Alex Smith in here to "mentor" a draft pick and ultimately be a backup?

Well guess what? Recent NFL history suggests that's a complete fantasy. Recent Chiefs history is even more definitive.

If they bring in Smith, he WILL start. Bank on it.

Legit QB competitions don't happen in the NFL when one guy is a proven vet and the other guy is a draft pick.

If you want a legit QB competition, you don't want Alex Smith.

The NFL is conservative by nature. The former starter is ALWAYS going to win an "open competition".

didn't the 49ers offer Alex Smith a new deal just last spring when they whiffed on Manning?

We won't really find that out until we've had a decent sample size. I'd say he should be improving by year 2, and be competing in the playoffs year 3. Then again, it will take the eye-test, not necessarily team wins.

He could put up godly numbers and our defense could be soft. You never know.
