Check the Cable Cutting thread for advice on XBMC.
Here's a post where Fish (resident XBMC expert) lists some great addons. Quote:

One question, which remote app were you using (Official XBMC Remote?)? I'd like to be able to start using this damn thing, but with the remote issues I'm experiencing, no joy. I figure one of the apps will work for me until I can pick up a wireless keyboard w/touchpad, just looking for a rec. TIA.

I went ahead and bought a Logitech keyboard with built in touchpad as well. It's worked pretty well but I end up using my iPad or phone and the remote app just as often.

I'm a big fan of the Constellation remote for iOS. More often than not, I use that on my iPad to control XBMC.
https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/xbmc...437807301?mt=8 It's got nice features such as showing you your entire XBMC Library, so you can easily scroll through your Library on your iPad itself, and select your desired video. You can directly launch plugins at any time as well. So you can quickly jump to another plugin without navigating around XBMC. And it will allow you to easily seek to a specific point in time in the video you're watching using a slider bar, meaning you can jump instantly to the 1hr. mark without having to FF or anything. It gives you a "Trackpad" like interface to browse XBMC with too, that's really handy. I liked it so much I did the in App upgrade for it as well. Only downfall is that there isn't an Android version of it.

Goddamn you Steeve Jobs. I'll give the official one a go to see if I can at least get up and running. If no, I'll probably just download some of the others too and see where I can get with them. The remote issue is sort of pissing me off, but seeing as how I didn't have to pay for the box, can't really complain too much. I'll see what I can get into with it tonight. Appreciate the info and the stuff in the other thread. I haven't had cable (Well, legit cable. Paid the guy $75 when he hooked up my internet and had it, but since everything has been converting I'm basically down to networks now) in a while, just doing the MLB TV/Netflix/Etc. route so sort of interested to see what this can do for me.
