Misc ever make knives? - Page 2

i wanna make some knives out of and old cross cut saw i have. and since my father is long gone i need whatever advice i can get. i can remember him saying he made his from a crosscut saw, i figure because the steel would hold an edge.

most important - what kind of bandsaw blade would be needed( i dont wanna take the temper from the steel)? is there a better steel on the market for a decent price? handles? is there a market?

Here's a trick on making a blade from a saw by stock removal.... don't wear gloves when you grind. Whenever the metal feels warm, quench it in water. Otherwise you'll ruin the temper of the saw blade. Grind til warm, quench. Grind til warm, quench.

eBay has great materials for handles. Search "knife scales." I've been using whale bone that my dog found at the beach & abalone shell. Buffalo horn & bone are good materials to learn on.

screw it. im gonna pull the leaf springs off the shooting truck and go from there. i hooked into a friend of my dads who said i could have full run of his blacksmith/ metal shop anytime i wanted. ill post pics later this winter.

thanks for putting me on the right track that blade forums has made me cross eyed, but theres lots of good info.

If you've got leaf springs, use them to make a crossbow. That's way cooler. I had a crossbow made out of a leaf spring when I was a kid, and it was a weapon of the ages.

oK, so i rounded up all my tools(my god i have alot of stuff), tracked down my grinder, welding table, vise, both anvils. Got my shop tables built, new lights, and shitasstons of junk sifted through and hauled off.

Dug through the steel pile found a 3-3/12 foot radial saw blade and acouple 1/2 in by 4ft leaf springs.
Im gonna finish settin everything up in the next couple days and get started.
The real shit part is that im gonna have to pull my foundry back out and it weighs the better part of a ton. booo. ill post pics as i go.
Tv is stoopid.

edit- needs; files to start with & c-clamps. advice?
