That's a tough decision...

Man Forced to Choose Who to Save: Wife or Son Monday, November 30, 2009 It is the choice no parent — or spouse — should ever have to make. When New Zealand woman Vanessa Horton crashed her car into a river near the family home, her husband had to make the excruciating choice between saving her or resucing his son, who was trapped in the sinking car. Silva Horton, 13, drowned in New Zealand's Whanganui River on Saturday night after the car, in which he was a front-seat passenger, came off the road and cartwheeled down a steep 32 foot bank into the water. His father, Stacy, arrived from their nearby home in Whanganui, on North Island, less than two minutes after the crash to hear his wife screaming in the darkness and the family Mazda submerged, nose-down, three feet under the surface. As his wife floundered in the water, Horton tried to dive down to the car to rescue his son, but said he could not reach the teenager. "I tried to get down and get him but I couldn't, it was just too deep. And Vanessa was going under," Mr Horton told the Dominion Post newspaper. "I made a call to pull my wife to safety. I looked back and I could see the tail-lights but it was too far and I couldn't get him," he said. |

I think a lot of that is that is playing the odds. I there are complications during child birth, the child has a much higher risk of issues than the mother...if you choose the save the child you are also choosing more of a risk to lose both. Sad, but I think it is more of a hedging of bets.

Now, if complications were to arise during birth, I would definitely save my wife. We can always make more babies... of course she'd probably end up hating me for life and never speaking to me again, but at least I'd be able to live with myself.

Same here. I think both my wife and I would agree...save the kids before each other. I'd die to save my children, and I think she'd do the same.

People really should consult with alnorth or another certified actuary before attempting a rescue.

Sorry this is a no-brainer if you have an equal chance at saving one or the other. Its a parents duty to save the child. And any spouse who has a problem with that is a selfish parent. In fact, you are a selfish parent. You never think about anyone but yourself. You **** up everybody's life and don't care who you hurt. I'm glad we are divorced! You are.....oh..wait.........sorry

I'd have gone after whichever one was closest to going under first, but I don't think that I'd have been able to see my car going under with my child still in it and alive. Nope. Pretty sure I die trying to save him/her.

THIS. Easy decision. If it was turned around and it was me or the son I'd never be able to forgive her.

Gah, these stories are always killers, especially so near the holidays. I read one online today about a 74 year old grandmother who got out of her car to place flowers at a roadside memorial for her granddaughter who died in early Nov., yep, mowed down & killed by a pickup truck.
I cant say who i'd try to save, i dont see how anyone could without being in his shoes. Lose/Lose. |
