Game of Thrones (spoiler-free zone)

A few have suggested it, might as well test the waters. The idea is to give people who haven't read the books a safe place to talk about the show.

A few quick ground rules:
  • No Spoilers!!!!! for upcoming episodes.
  • Larger Song of Ice and Fire discussion should be limited to the other thread although I think a tiny bit of book delving to fill in holes should be okay (example of this would be talking about Catelyn and her treatment of the wolves in the novel, which was alluded to on TV but never really made clear...)
  • Everything that happened that week is fair game once an episode airs. So if you don't watch on Sunday night, I'd stay outta here until you do...

I know everyone loves how brutal and "unpredictable" GoT is, but it's wearing on me. I don't find it unpredictable at all anymore. Basically, just think of the most awful, least just series of events and that is what will happen, only worse.

I've watched and loved plenty of shows that can rip your heart out, but there are usually at least small moments of triumph. I just don't find that in this show. Honestly I'll probably keep watching because my friends all watch it together so it's a social thing. That said, I find myself less and less invested in the show and it's characters because I feel manipulated by the writers at almost every turn.

This latest development is a prime example. They introduce an awesome, dynamic character that everyone loves. I knew for a Goddamn fact he was going to die in that fight. How could you not know that? The worst part is that it was executed in such an implausible, silly way.

The show still has it's moments, for sure. After a slow start, this season has gotten a lot better. Some great scenes. It's just that I am starting to feel I'm watching the Royals. There are occasionally great moments, but no matter how much promise it shows, I am destined to be disappointed when it comes to anything significant.

It does wear on you. Many felt this same way after the Red Wedding.

This is my problem with the books after Storm of Swords. There is no payoff in the story anywhere near in sight. It hits a lull where it's like "okay.. what is there left for me to root for?? Why should I care at this point?"

The problem I had with the 4th and 5th books isn't that there's no payoff in sight, it's that too many of the payoffs got put off to book 6. But this is the spoiler free thread, so won't go into detail.

Exactly this.

I fully expected Oberyn to bite the big one given his over-confidence throughout the duel. The Red Wedding was a jaw dropper because I fully didn't expect it, but I was totally bracing myself for the inevitable here. Even then...Jesus Christ....what a way to kick the bucket.

I'm all in for Tyrion, but that's the last straw. If he dies, then I may as well just root for The Mountain.

(BTW, did The Mountain end up dying after finishing off Oberyn?)

It wasn't definite, but it certainly seemed to be the implication. I was expecting Oberyn to die as well, but when he plunged his spear into him, I thought, maybe he does have a larger role in this. Then he loses his teeth, and I'm like, "Ah, shit."

I liked the scene. It was like the Princess Bride climactic duel, except, of course, the good guy doesn't always win!

Don't read anything about the show until you are caught up. It's worth it, especially as you won't have to wait months or years to get there.

Game of Thrones (spoiler-free zone)

I, idiotically, happened to peruse this thread a long time ago. Like, months ago after watching a couple of the episodes.

Luckily, at that point, I didn't know enough about the characters to be able to remember much.

I had originally "remembered" reading that they killed off my dawg Jon Snow, who was my early favorite, but have been told that he's still alive so now I'm guessing I misremembered and it's probably Rob Stark because he's my new fave.

They better not kill him off. I'll choke a bitch.

That feeling was pretty much represented in the most recent episode through Arya's laughter upon receiving the latest bit of bad news about her aunt's death.

I actually thought this was a "faster" start than any season previous to this one, particularly with Joffrey's assassination.

And I think that's exactly how we, the viewers, are supposed to feel...disappointed, discouraged, defeated, and even hopeless...just like the actual characters in the show going through this terrible shit. It's not supposed to be pleasant to watch right now. But that should only maximize the eventual payoffs when/if they do occur.

It was a decently fast start as far as events occurring. I more meant they were generally weak episodes but have gotten much better. As far as the eventual payoff, I hope you're right. It just seems like I would not be at all surprised if Martin is just trolling the whole planet right now.
