The 49ers have expressed to others that a deal for QB Alex Smith is effectively complete. Can't be finalized til league year begins 3/12

Jason La Canfora ‏@JasonLaCanfora

so it's not official, both clubs view it at as it's effectively done. I do not know the other team. KC and JAX are 2 teams that make sense

How could he possibly know that? And if San Fran did tell him that, to me that is posturing. They are trying to make the cards increase their offer. Id also suggest the mere fact the Cardinals are interested is very good news.

I'd be happy with ej manuel, tyler bray, mike glennon, matt barkley, or tyler wilson. I'd also be happy with geno. I wouldn't mind trading up for him if he's still there towards the middle of the first round but i don't want to use th first pick on him. There are special players to be had. Even a sheldon richardson or shariff floyd, or even a dee milliner that would make our team alot better. Then we add a second round qb and let him learn under reid and alex smith.

I definitely wouldn't mind joeckel as he is the favorite for most people to land the top pick. That way we wouldn't have to pay albert and we could save that money to get bowe's deal done and add another key free agent.

Alex Smith is efficient and productive.

He is not going to lose games with poor passes and poor decisions.
He's going to move the chains and give your team the chance to wi a lot of games, as long as you surround him with talent across the board on offense, and support him with a top of the line defense.

He is the very definition of efficient game manager.

The problem is that you are going to come up against teams in the playoffs that have all of that in place, but that are led by a QB that can put his team on his shoulders and make plays to win games.

Alex Smith can not.

He doesn't suck, but he is nowhere near good enough.

It's done. a few sites are saying that geno could still fall out of the first round and i would be extremely happy to pick him up at 33 but i'd be reluctant to do that with the first pick.

Alex Smith is essentially 2008/2010 Matt Cassel, without the 2011/2012 issues.

No ****ing thanks.

So you are saying you would be happier with a far lesser talent at a position of FAR greater importance? There is no way all those guys are there at the top of the second or even towards the end of the first. Geno is being talked up by EVERYONE now that he at least will be a top 10 pick.

I tell you what. wouldn't you rather Geno and a non qb in the second? Especially as it is an incredibly deep draft at almost every position other than quarterback? Gee i sure would..

A week ago, before the combine, after watching 6 games, Mayock said Geno was worthy of pick No. 20-32.

Yesterday, on NFL Network, he calls him a top 10 pick/talent in this draft.

You can throw McShay into the mix, too.

Don't listen to the experts. Especially when they're talking about guys in December and January.

Mel Kiper had Manti Te'o - who plays a non-impact position and is a below-average athlete for the position - as his top player on the board in December. Why does ANYONE place ANY stock in what he was saying about other players at that point?

Kiper will probably be the LAST guy to admit Geno Smith is a top 10 pick. But he will, just like everyone else.
Right after the Chiefs trade for Alex Smith, the 'consensus' #1 overall pick will become Geno.

There really does seem to be a massive bias against the Chiefs ever taking skill position players high, the QB being the most obvious example.

If you put the Eagles or Raiders there, every analyst in the country would be talking about how Geno is the natural progression from Vick/Palmer and they'd be drooling over how that 40 time would look buying time and creating mis-matches for a Chip Kelly offense (which isn't the read-option offense that so many folks are characterizing it as).

He's going to go 1.1 unless we keep it and draft Joeckel.

Which is probably what's going to happen.

Guess Mayock got the payout he was looking for. A bit more he'll have Geno at 1.

You know what else would save money? Cutting the dead Pioli weight like Cassel and Jackson.
