The 49ers have expressed to others that a deal for QB Alex Smith is effectively DONE

The 49ers have expressed to others that a deal for QB Alex Smith is effectively complete. Can't be finalized til league year begins 3/12

Jason La Canfora ‏@JasonLaCanfora

so it's not official, both clubs view it at as it's effectively done. I do not know the other team. KC and JAX are 2 teams that make sense

It really dosnt matter what Alex wants. You dont tell him your future plans. You trade for him (If you must) say you are going to be our 2013 starting quarterback and see what happens. If Geno ends up starting 8 games in. terrific. If Alex has a season. tremendous. I have no problem making Geno wait, and i have must less of a problem telling Alex to hit the bench when we need him to.

Alex Smith can very easily be what Trent Green was here in KC. That's his ceiling.

That's a ceiling I don't want. I'd rather have a guy with an Aaron Rodgers ceiling (Geno).

But I don't have to scream MATT CASSEL MATT CASSEL MATT CASSEL any time something doesn't go my way.
The people on the other side of this argument aren't objective in ANY WAY.

Why do we have to walk the straight and narrow when they don't?

**** that. **** them. And **** you.

Alex Smith is NO BETTER THAN MATT CASSEL.

Don't ****ing care what you say.

He did exactly what he does.
He managed the game, and didn't lose it for them by making poor throws and bad decisions.

Meanwhile, Eli made 3 big plays that gave the Giants the win.

Alex Smith is a average/to above average NFL QB. He's exactly what you said. An efficient game manager.

I said his ceiling was Trent Green.

Which is 'meh.' I liked Green a lot. One of my favorite Chiefs...

but we've been down that road. Time to take a franchise QB at #1 and see what happens. If they want to give the 49ers a 4th for Alex Smith and take Geno at 1.1 then I'm more than ok with that.

But Smith and Joeckel? We better go 12-4, win at least 1 playoff game, and see Alex Smith have a career year and not just a stat wise career year.
I'll bet if I dug hard enough I could find a post from you saying Matt Cassel's ceiling was Trent Green back in 2009. They're the same dude. One had much better coaching, and much better talent surrounding him the last couple of years.

If they want to trade 4.1 for Smith and take Geno 1.1 that is MORE than fine with me. Nothing is wrong with competition and I don't mind it...

it almost would compare to Drew Brees/Philip Rivers in San Diego back when Brees was thought of as a "bust" but Philip held out giving Brees one more shot...

I'm not going to freak out until it becomes absolutely clear we don't take Geno at #1.

I'm looking forward to Reid and Dorsey screwing this up so that I can just cut ties with this stupid franchise and root for a better one that Geno Smith lands on. (Please just don't be the Raiders). I would even become a minor Jags fan.

I just don't think if the Chiefs are planning on drafting Geno #1 overall if they trade for Alex Smith. I just don't. You start your #1 overall draft pick from day one.

Now if Alex was a FA QB who could come cheap as a stopgap? Maybe. And just maybe. But clearly he's not that.

Shoot if they trade for Alex, I'm concerned they might not take a QB in round 2. I assume they would give up say a 3rd at least for Alex. You telling me on a 2-14 team they're going to spend 2 of their first 3 picks on QB? Particularly if they let Albert walk and take a LT with that #1? I don't think so.

Lets just all accept that if they trade for Alex Smith, it's...

There is smoke behind everything this time of the year.

I just know one thing for sure: if the Chiefs trade for Alex Smith, he's the guy for the near future (aka 2 years at least).

I think if they like Geno Smith, they won't trade for Alex Smith and just start the kid from day one.

I think it's one or the other. Just don't see both happening.

Ultimately, that's what it is.

They can trade for Alex Smith if they want but it's not over until the draft.

No one wanted Alex Smith when he was a free agent last year. What makes you think he would cost so much? I would much prefer to Draft Geno and play him straight away, but its not crazy to think they could do both. It actually makes quite a bit of sense.

Trint Green struggled a bit until we was behind one of the best offensive lines/TE ever assembled. While we have a good line, I wouldn't expect anywhere near the production we got out of Green from Alex Smith

I'm just not sure you can pidgeon-hole Reid and Dorsey.

Seems to me like this is a wildcard offseason.

Isn't the going rate based on history that trading for a starting QB costs at least a 2nd?

I said 3rd.
