Game of Thrones (spoiler-free zone)

A few have suggested it, might as well test the waters. The idea is to give people who haven't read the books a safe place to talk about the show.

A few quick ground rules:
  • No Spoilers!!!!! for upcoming episodes.
  • Larger Song of Ice and Fire discussion should be limited to the other thread although I think a tiny bit of book delving to fill in holes should be okay (example of this would be talking about Catelyn and her treatment of the wolves in the novel, which was alluded to on TV but never really made clear...)
  • Everything that happened that week is fair game once an episode airs. So if you don't watch on Sunday night, I'd stay outta here until you do...

Varys, sneaky, conniving, dickless, bitch that he is, kind of gave me pause in this episode. I always knew LF wanted the iron throne, but Varys seemed indifferent. He stated he wanted to protect "the realm". I believe he stated as much to Ned Stark in the dungeon.

But the discussion with Oberyn at the throne, prior to the trial, makes me think he has his sights set on the throne also.

"The absence of desire, leaves one to pursue other things" (stares longingly at the throne).

I didn't get that. I got the impression he knew it didn't belong to the Lannisters, and he was willing to do whatever it took to get it to the rightful king or queen. I'm thinking he's loyal to the Targaryens, and thus Dany.

I thought it could have just been him messing with Oberyn's head there (which would be his style). Interesting scene, though, it's always been tough to get a read on Varys.

I didnt know what to think about it either. I thought he told Baelish that he didnt want tge throne. I may be misrememering though. It is fairly obvious Baelish wants it but if Verys wants it, that adds another interesting wrinkle.

I hadn't thought of that. Definitely an option.

I interpreted that as him wanting the throne, but not for himself. I think FMB may be on to something, with him still feeling loyalty to the Targaryens.

I didn't think he had any good will or care to the Targaryens, but perhaps he sees that she may very well be on the winning side, so he is making space for himself there now.

Jorah is (or was, I guess, as of Sunday) spying on Dany for Varys. If Varys is loyal to the Targs, that's an odd way of showing it.
