Teicher:Reid talks to Pederson, Childress about coaching positions

Reid talks to Pederson, Childress about coaching positions
By ADAM TEICHER
The Kansas City Star
Andy Reid is looking to his past to fill some key positions on the offensive side of the Chiefs coaching staff, a source close to the situation said.

Reid was talking to former Philadelphia assistant coaches Doug Pederson and Brad Childress about working for the Chiefs. Pederson, an Eagles assistant for the past four seasons, would be either the offensive coordinator or quarterbacks coach, perhaps both.

The role for Childress, a member of Reid’s staff for seven years earlier in his coaching career, was less certain but he wouldn’t serve as coordinator or quarterbacks coach. Pederson, 44, was an NFL quarterback for parts of 12 seasons, mostly as Brett Favre’s backup in Green Bay. But he also started nine games for Philadelphia in 1999, Reid’s first season with the Eagles.

Pederson began his NFL coaching career in 2009 with Philadelphia and was the quarterbacks coach the past two years.

Childress, 56, was on Reid’s staff with the Eagles for seven seasons, three as offensive coordinator, before leaving in 2006 to become the head coach of the Minnesota Vikings. After being fired by the Vikings in 2010, he spent last season as the offensive coordinator for the Cleveland Browns.

Another former member of Reid’s staff in Philadelphia, Pat Shurmur, also doesn’t appear to be a candidate for offensive coordinator. Shurmur was an offensive assistant for Reid and the Eagles for 10 seasons and spent the last two seasons as the Browns’ head coach.

The Chiefs have interviewed Ray Farmer and John Dorsey for the vacant general manager’s position.

Farmer, 38, is the Chiefs’ director of pro personnel. Dorsey, 52, is Green Bay’s director of college scouting.

Farmer was a linebacker for the Eagles for three seasons in the 1990s but his playing career ended in 1998, the year before Reid arrived in Philadelphia. He joined the Chiefs in 2006 after four years as a scout with the Atlanta Falcons.

Dorsey was started his personnel career as a scout with Green Bay in 1991. Reid joined the Packers as an assistant coach the next year. The two worked together in Green Bay until 1999, when Reid left for Philadelphia.

Chiefs chairman Clark Hunt and Reid have been conducting the interviews with general manager candidates. Both have said Hunt will make the decision on which candidate the Chiefs would hire.

Both the new general manager and Reid will report directly to Hunt. That’s a change from the old structure where the coach reported to the general manager and the general manager to Hunt.

The Chiefs, who finished 2-14 last year, fired coach Romeo Crennel the day after the season ended. They parted ways with general manager Scott ***** later in the week, shortly after agreeing to terms of a five-year contract with Reid.
