Is the new preseason cut-down process functional?

After last nights game/training camp, I would say the coaches already have a pretty good idea which 15 players (first cuts) wont make the team. Walk-ons and UDFAs.

What's the point of keeping that dead weight around until the end of camp? It seems it would take valuable practice/game time away from the players that have an actual shot.

If teams know which players arent going to stick...what do they do with with them for an extra week? 37 additional bodies is a lot to account for...(22+15)

Maybe the NFL should start a collaborative 10-12 team developmental league instead...with teams owning the rights to players from their individual camps. There are some players that just arent ready for the NFL...small school and other factors.

I understand that aspect...but is it functional? Would it limit those players that actually have a shot at catching on... by sharing time with those that dont?

Yeah, I think they should cut some of them now and bring in new bodies to try out.

Avoiding potential injuries to those that will make the team. Let the "camp fodder" get hurt. Use the "camp fodder" to beat up on and why probably our 3rd string offense and defense played much of the game last night and why Beathard looked like an All Pro QB as well.

They never should have gotten rid of NFL Europe. I think they should have expanded it and made it like AAA for the NFL.

If the coaches already know who is going to get cut then those coaches can decide to not play certain players much even if they don't cut them. You'll see player thrown out there in the final 8 minutes of each preseason game basically like meat to the wolves, they are out there playing to keep the other guys healthy.

There's nothing preventing teams from cutting guys early. You don't HAVE to have 75 men on your roster during the entirety of the preseason. Or just, you know... play the guys you want to play. All these dipshits who would have gotten cut in the first round are only going to see one extra preseason game and a shortened practice week leading into that game. It's not hard to have those guys run drills and all that and then when you get to game prep, only a handful of players get snaps. That's probably what happens anyway during the course of this part of the offseason.

The NFL should have a minor league, with a team in places like Wichita or Omaha for the Chiefs, and similar markets for the rest of the league.

I don't see it as such a hinderance. I actually see it as an advantage, because it gives the teams opportunities to cut and add players that they normally wouldn't, since their current perspective may not be the correct one.

It also allows teams to keep their hand-selected players longer, so in the event of an injury, they are still properly staffed, and don't have to scramble like they used to.

Yep. Don't know why they don't do it.

Because it cuts into their profits.

Why create a sub league when the NCAA does it for free?

Nearly every GM or head coach will tell you that the roster is 95% set before training camp even starts.

There's generally room for a couple of players that might surprise in camp but the 53 and Practice Squad are almost already in place.

In terms of O-line, which I mentioned in another thread, it's worse and only going to continue to get worse. The 2017 draft was the first time that a offensive lineman wasn't taken in the Top Ten, going back to the 1930's.

Bolles was taken by the Broncos with #20.
