It has to hit the ground. dropkicks were more prevalent in the days of Jim Thorpe when the ball was shaped more like a rugby ball. By around 1940 the drop kick was completely out of the game.

So they make rules to make other rules not be rules. It seems that ST plays have had some major changes the last few years. It makes it hard to keep up.

Pretty sure the drop kick has been around longer than the NFL. I just didn't realize that you could do it on a kickoff, but it seems that people just never do.
