My little foray into wealth last night.

Just had to mention this. I went to a business party last night, and it was at a very upscale condo, quite swanky and architecturally distinctive. I'm nosy, so I looked up the assessed value. It was about $1.7 million, which actually seems cheap for this place since it was very, very nice.

The furnishings didn't seem that livable, and I was curious who actually lived in the place. During a conversation, one of the hostesses told me. It was a family that has a mansion a couple of miles away, but they bought this condo just as a place to host parties.

Okay, got it. This is a $1.7 million private clubhouse. They bought a $1.7 million condo just to hold parties.

Then I got the tour.

It had a lot of art in it, and there was a piece upstairs over a couch by a particular artist that I recognized. He's a somewhat obscure artist, but I knew the name and I was thinking, "Wait a minute".

So when I got home I did a little searching. That painting - the exact painting that was over the couch - sold at auction a couple of years ago for $1.2 million.

That piece was about 36" x 48". And they had two more pieces by the same artist that were enormous. At the same auction where the small painting was sold, another painting by this artist sold for over $60 million, so there's a high end that's pretty high. And one of the big paintings looked suspiciously similar to another one that auctioned off for $20 million.

And that was the one artist that I'd heard of. There were two more pieces that the knowledgeable art people were oohing and aahing about that I suspect may have been similar in status.

And the thing is, I've never heard of the owners. It's some finance dude and his wife.

There's some serious money walking around in this world, and it's not just famous people. It's really kind of amazing to see what some people out there can afford to do. I really should have gone into finance as a career.

Anyone else ever wander into a display of wealth like this? Let's hear the stories.

You've always struck me as a liberal Donger. Not sure how that's relevant but what art do you have on the walls?

My art collection consistences of the "Rat Pack" playing pool that hangs in my basement. I'm never home and the women is the same way. It's a place to sleep, cook and take a peaceful dump.

How often do you look at paintings? Not being a smart ass but seriously, would you miss them after seeing them so much if someone stole them?

I know, I'm a rube.

Must be nice~
I was down in Westlake, TX a about 10 years ago, when we were more into horses. An ex-Steeler lived down there, with a similar setup (minus the skeet shooting, I'm thinking the golf course next door with have issue with that). When you inventory things in your head and realize the cost of just the coolzone fans at the top of the show barn, you know these are deep deep pockets.

I work for company that sells a niche product to boat/yacht owners. There are over a 100 boat yards in the Ft. Lauderdale/Miami area.

My first idea of how much money was out there, was my first trip to one of the more modest yards that had at least 30 yachts in the 100 million dollar range. and 100 or more at, at least, 50M.....that was 1 yard.....1.
There are 1000s of them in those yards at 20M+.

How much dough do you need to have a Fn boat that costs 20M?....Take a guess.

There are A LOT of people, with A LOT of money. Its staggering.

Pretty much.

Kind of puts our (mundane) decisions in a whole new perspective...

Guy I was in the Army with grew up on Long Island, lived down the road from Jimmy Connors. I stayed with his family for a week.

Grandfather had made a fortune in lumber and passed it to his kids. Many many millions each.

My buddy was definitely the black sheep of the family.

No million dollar paintings but he had a good friend who dated Maria Carey through high school.

His fiance babysat for the head of props as NBC studios so we got a kick ass tour of the place and tix to the Letterman show (when still on NBC of course).

My sister was Will Shields live in nanny for a couple years after becoming friends with his wife while going to college at KC Wesleyan. Never got to take advantage of that situation though.

Thats all I got.

Yea, around 1997 and 1998.

She called me the night before the 1997 Playoff game with free tickets because some of Will's family wasn't going to make it.

Couldn't go because of the short notice and my wife was sick.

Thank God I didn't.

I did keep his number on my little caller ID thing for like a year. I was shocked it showed up and wasn't private.

Anyway she got to go to Hawaii for the ProBowl with them 1 year and she spent a month in Europe with his wife's family, she was from Denmark.

Very cool down to earth people. His wife and kids came to my sisters grad party. Will was out of town on business..

I had a similar experience last year. A parent from my kid's soccer team invited everyone over for an end of year party. When we got to his neighborhood it was like, "They live here?" Huge houses with giant grand entrances and pricey landscaping. His house was huge, and nice. I knew his wife was a high level exec at JC Penney and he was some kind of exec but I had no idea that had that kind of dough. He dips and wears a scrubby T shirt and shorts all the time.
