Dream Theater - The Astonishing (new concept album/rock opera)

I'm loving this new album. Took me a couple listens to really get into it but is is well worth a listen. It is a concept album or a rock opera type of album, if you will. Check the Rolling Stone piece for a description. It is 2 discs and 34 songs, over 2 hours of music. They are doing a tour this Spring as an Evening With type of show that will be only this album in its entirety. The thing that sucks is that I don't see any KC dates. Oh well, if a trip to Denver or Minneapolis is what I have to do then so be it.

Here is a quick opinion:

Never been a DT fan due to LaBrie... but his vocals on this album actually make me comfortable enough to listen!

This could be a soundtrack, or a broadway musical.
It's a masterpiece really.

This is the first DT record I've liked since Portnoy left.

PS - his Winery Dogs album is pretty baller as well.

Me being a big DT fan of course I like them all. But I'll admit that the last one didn't do it for me as much. Sure, there were some songs that stood out. But overall, it wasn't as strong as most others in their collection.

That being said, the the first album after Portnoy left is one of my all time favorite DT albums.

Also, I enjoy Winery Dogs, too.
