The Chiefs need to sign WR Jermaine Kearse in free agency.
I've looked over the players coming available in free agency a hundred times, probably. This is a pretty average year for free agency, sadly, but there are good gets for the Chiefs everywhere that are very cheap and would help us a lot. (Nearly everybody in DraftPlanet agrees, for example, that Kendrick Ellis would be a great acquisition for the Chiefs to fit our defense, spell Dontari Poe, and cost pennies on the dollar.)

But I don't think there's a bigger opportunity to improve the Chiefs this offseason than Jermaine Kearse. The #1 goal for the Chiefs this offseason HAS to be to at LEAST bolster this offense from a league-worst squad to a league-average squad. And I think that's very doable even if we cut Bowe (which I do not support) and Avery (which I do). Signing Jermaine Kearse and burning two of our first four picks at WR will go a long way to doing so.

Let me count the ways:

1. Kearse should actually hit the free market. The Seahawks are going to lose their biggest competitive advantage this offseason when they have to pay Russell Wilson, and pay him they will, making him the highest paid QB in the NFL. They're also reportedly going to pay Marshawn Lynch, meaning that they could tie up anywhere from $25-40m on those two critical players. Kearse is, ultimately, expendable, as he's not a #1 WR and he is far more replaceable than those two.

2. Kearse fits what the Chiefs like at WR. Seahawks John Schneider and John Dorsey both come from the Ted Thompson GM tree, and they both have very similar taste in players. In Dorsey's short time as Chiefs GM, they've picked up a few Seahawks castoffs, most notably Ron Parker. Kearse went undrafted in 2012, and is 6'1", just over 200 lbs, and runs a 40 in the low 4.4s.

3. Kearse won't command huge coin. This stat is as important as it gets. I really like Kearse's talent, but the Seahawk's run-first offense isn't conducive to great stats -- he only has 60 career catches in 3 years. But when you look at the track record there: virtually no playing time in 2012, 22 rec in 2013, and 38 rec in 2014, you can see that he's truly making progress but is in no position to command a big payday, even in a weak free agency market at WR.

4. Kearse plays his best when the games are huge. Call him the anti-Bowe, and the Chiefs desperately need one. We've seen Kearse make huge plays in two straight Super Bowls, from a big TD against the Broncos to The Catch against the Patriots.

5. Kearse is only 25 years old.

I've been watching this kid since he was in college. I was shocked he went undrafted, and would love to see him in KC. He won't cost too much, which may be why he ends up back in Seattle.

Kearse almost cost them the NFC Championships with his tipped balls that went for interceptions and only got redeemed on the last touchdown. He didn't initiate his block on the last play that helped the Seahawks gift wrap the Super Bowl for the Pats, the call of was worse but Kearse didn't help that play materialize either. I'm good without this guy, saying he plays his best in big games is giving him too much credit. Also Alex wouldn't have made that over the shoulder throw that Wilson did either. The catch was based on him letting the New England defender get the inside on him and if he didn't get a lucky bounce he would've never been allowed to make a circus catch.
