Group of Chiefs fans wants to turn up volume at Arrowhead

Loudest stadium in Seattle? Not if a group of Chiefs fans has anything to say about it.




Congregating in a newly formed Facebook group dubbed Terrorhead Returns, the fast-growing cadre of red-and-yellow-clad fans is hoping to counter a group of Seahawks backers who are attempting to get CenturyLink Field into the Guinness Book of Records as the loudest stadium on Earth.

Quoting from the Terrorhead Returns page: “We have submitted an application with Guiness (sic) World Book and will request the permission from the Kansas City Chiefs and the NFL to be given a fair chance to put the record where it is truly deserved. Join in Chiefs Fans! GO CHIEFS!!!”

So far, the Seattle contingent, which goes by the handle “Volume 12” (an homage to the team’s “12th Man” legacy of fan support), is a step ahead of KC’s. According to a post on NFL.com, the Seattle group announced on its own Facebook page that its application to have the decibels measured at the Seahawks’ Sept. 15 Sunday Night Football showdown with the San Francisco 49ers has formally been accepted by Guinness.

The official entry would be dubbed “loudest crowd roar at a sports stadium.”

A website in Seattle, SeattlePI.com, reports that the current record is held by the Ali Sami Yen Sport Complex Turk Telekom Arena in Istanbul, Turkey. The decibels measured that day? An ear-splitting 131.76, or slightly louder than the sound of an airliner at takeoff. The Turkish fans were cheering on a soccer match played by Galatasaray S.K.

Size of the venue could factor into Seattle’s Sept. 15 bid: NFL.com reports that the highest decibels recorded at the so-called CLink peaked at 112, but notes that the Seahawks’ home digs hold 67,000, or 14,000more than the Turkish stadium.

If size matters, and if Terrorhead Returns can get a date with Guinness — and if Chiefs fans can fill it to capacity — Arrowhead could play a huge factor in a record bid. The venerable Truman Sports Complex venue holds 79,451, or more than 12,000 more than CenturyLink Field.

But Terrorhead Returns, though just launched Friday, has ground to make up in terms of likes on its Facebook page. As of 8 p.m. Tuesday, it had 1,830 members compared with 6,263 likes for Volume 12.

SOC doesn't need good press, bad press or any press at this point. They have done their job.

I think it was 77/78 my family went to a game at Arrowhead in December. We sat lower level on the east side about halfway up. My friend and I each walked a different direction and met on the other side of the stadium. It was so empty we could hear my Dad yell at us to head back over-lol This was 3rd quarter and everyone had left.

In the 80's we went when they had ticket give aways- usually several games a year-that was the only way people would go. We had a few years of false hope when crowds grew larger.

The 90's came. Neil and DT-enough said. We got season tickets DT's rookie year and the Bills game changed Everything. It was electric, I couldn't wait for sundays- it was usually thursday before I got my voice back-lol These were lifetime memories with my family and friends.

Then the PH/ Green years- the other side of the coin- was not nearly as loud because the D could not stop anyone- still so fun watching the Chiefs score at will.

Then the dark days came back. We suffered through years of going to games watching teams with poor leadership, unprepared, zero heart- but we went. It was a grind and depressing. The Chiefs rewarded us by raising our season tickets every year. The final nail was when they started adding a extra service charge for each season ticket holder so we were paying well over face value for preseason and meaningless games the Chiefs had no chance of winning. A December game against the Donks- I could not even give my extra tickets away. It was soo fun sitting in freezing rain watching the future SB winning Donks steamroll us like we we a high school team. Walking out getting yelled at like we were at Their stadium. I thought that was the low point- then came last year. Disfunction, rebellion, losing, finger pointing, banners and the lowest point in Arrowhead history- murder / suicide.

So I completely understand everyones attitude on here. I have had my heart ripped out by my team more than I could count. Frooze at the Colts playoff game, nearly washed down the stairs at the Monsoon game, baked in the sun at all the stoppid full price preseason games, and was at the game when Montana did his magic and gave us Hope. Been going to Arrowhead my whole life- ups and downs- magic and tragic. I really think it is part of who I am.

Well after years of hearing how bad the Chiefs suck on a daily basis- it was nice to see people excited for them again-no matter how hollow some might think the cause is. Posting their defining moments in pictures which mirrored my own. Will it work? Will they get the record? Will it jump start a new era? I don't know and it doesn't matter to me.

At least at this moment there is HOPE. Hope we can bring back what is dear to us, the good old days which seem even more special with the black marks and wounds still fresh from last year. Hope our team becomes respectable and starts winning again. Hope for that elusive championship. Hope that we can laugh and tail gate with our loved ones and build memories. Hope we can take our kids and be proud of our team and Arrowhead becomes part of them like it is with us. Hope that no matter how far our kids move away to find their own life- Arrowhead and Chiefs- mean Home.

Hope is for fools they say. But that is all I have left.

I see people commenting on how this is manufactured, and how it wasn't in the 90's. I keep seeing people say put a winning product on the field and that'll give people reason to come and be loud. I see comments about how people won't be cheering to disrupt the other team, which is the whole point, but rather to break the record, etc.

I agree with every bit of that. There's nothing better than a natural moment...a big play in a big game with a packed house and the place explodes. That's what we're all chasing here.

I think we can all agree, though, that one of the things that's so much fun about having a loud stadium is that it goes hand in hand with a good football team. I think it would be hard to argue against the fact that one of the reasons the team was playing well through the 90's was in fact because it had such a great home field advantage and we were able to win the majority of those games. There were MANY times when opposing teams were defeated by the deafening crowd. Drives are stalled and turnovers are forced in large part because of that loud crowd.

What better time than now to re-train our fan base and bring some excitement back into this stadium? Imagine they're somewhat logical about it and they choose times during which the opposing team's offense is on the field to call for the loud noise...multiple times throughout that game.

Now imagine if in doing so, the opposing team struggles mightily to hear each other or even hear themselves think. They get flustered and confused, they're calling timeouts (which makes the crowd cheer more and learn that what they're doing is helpful), they're making stupid mistakes causing turnovers...and BOOM! Pick 6 for a TD that NATURALLY erupts into an explosion of cheers...and just so happens to break the record at the same time.

All of sudden the fans feel that feeling again...that emotion of the big play at the right time with a full house. They see first hand just what's it like to watch your opponent seem helpless on the field because they can't hear a damn thing, and you witness again, just like we did in the 90's, how it can truly help your team with that game.

Now all of sudden we have a re-energized fan base who's been re-trained on when and how to be loud. Imagine if those pieces could fall into place and Arrowhead could become a big advantage for this team again.

In 2010 we still had a shitty team, but guess what, we won our home games. When you do that you only need to steal a couple on the road and you've got a great shot that year. If that starts to happen year in and year out again, the NATURAL effect will be just like it was in the 90s...when we were winning home games with the aid of a crazy stadium....and losing in the playoffs. LOL

Kidding aside, what is so wrong with this? People use all sorts of different techniques in business, sports, and everyday lives to get out of a rut and get back to "the good ol days."

I think this is a great idea and I'm all for it. Come on SOC, get off your high horse and enjoy this team for once.

I guess I pretty much nailed it.

What an awesome day!! And we did it with Less fans in the stadium than what the Seahags used in their partially covered tard stadium. We were consistently the LOUDEST STADIUM IN THE HISTORY OF THE WORLD- as posted- whereas the seahags had a few spikes when they "manufactured" the record.

The second we broke they were whining and complaining and signing up for another go at it.

We pushed it close to hearing loss level- I don't think they can beat it.
