Petrino back as Louisville Head Coach

Just breaking.

Looks like his motorcycle joyride has brought him full circle!

I hope half his staff quits mid-season on him. What a douche. I can't believe Louisville re-hired this guy. He'll leave in 4 years.

He had a massive buyout at Western Kentucky, or wherever he was currently coaching. IIRC

God I wish I knew how to coach football. These guys seemingly can't do anything to eliminate themselves from high paying good gigs. And when they do get fired, they get $7 mil like Shanahan anyway

I can't decide which is worse: this or Bruce Pearl being rehired at Tennessee (which seems inevitable at this point).

Well, in his defense, the guy is a proven winner at the college level. A completely misanthropic scumbag, but an offensive savant.

Louisville fans -- at least those on the Rivals and Scouts boards, which may be a shitty sample -- seem to LOVE this hire. I am genuinely shocked by that reaction, considering the way he left last time, the personal baggage he carries and, to a lesser extent, the fact that he just parlayed yet another program into a better gig.

I guess the optimist would say that his antics would suggest that this is as good of a program as he could hope for, but goddamn I would hate that hire if I were a fan. The guy doesn't give the first shit about Louisville.

Petrino was coach of the Cardinals from 2003-06, compiling a 41-9 record. While winning more than 80 percent of his games, including the program's first-ever BCS bowl victory, Petrino also serially shopped for other jobs.

He famously interviewed behind Jurich's back for the Auburn job in 2003 – at first denying it, and then admitting that he met with officials from the school while it still was employing Tommy Tuberville. The next year, Petrino interviewed with LSU five days after accepting an extension and pronouncing his loyalty to Louisville. That December he also interviewed with Notre Dame and had conversations with Mississippi about its opening. And a few months after signing a lucrative new deal at Louisville in 2006, he left for the NFL's Atlanta Falcons.

Despite those dalliances, many Louisville fans are welcoming their prodigal coach back with open arms. As of noon Wednesday, an online poll from The (Louisville) Courier-Journal had 40 percent of respondents favoring Petrino as the next coach of the Cardinals, with Morris a distant second place at 14 percent.
