Cable Companies : A RANT!

Do you ever get tired of being nickel and dimed to death? I do

My latest edition of the cable bill came with a little increase this last month. Over $2 in one month with no explanation on the bill. Looking closely between last and this months bills I found a difference in the "Maintenance" charges. The charges jumped from $2 to $3.95. Why a nearly 100% increase? Time to get on the phone and find out.

I get a very nice lady on the phone that explained the whole situation to me. She said that the company had people on all different pay scales in the computer system. Now that they've discovered the discrepancy the company had the bright idea to set everyone to the maximum scale in the system.

I was not very happy by this point, and because the rep on their end was nice, I held my cool. I told her that I thought they were wrong for posting the increase to the bill with no explanation for the increase. With the economy in shambles the way it is, putting more financial pressure on your clients is not very wise.

I ended the conversation with a, "Well I'm not paying for this anymore" and got the maintenance removed from my bill.

What was I paying this for? To safeguard some Coax cable and a splitter? Not me! No more Nickel and Dimeing this dude anymore!

Cable companies are the bane of my existence. I despise the way they do business.

I thought Time Warner was bad, but then I moved down here and was exposed to the absolute worst customer service in the world when I signed up with Comcast.

I've considered getting a corporate job with them just so I could F them up from the inside.

Local telephone companies often charge a maintenance fee too, they call it "inside wiring".

In general, it's a ridiculous ripoff.

I'm strongly considering just getting rid of cable and downloading any TV on the Internet. I'm seeing less and less reason to have it, and just need to talk my wife into it.

My internet is goddamn rediculous because I'm a half mile out of town. That's not an option for me.

Your telephone company sucks.

A half mile is WELL within the 20,000-foot range of standard DSL. In fact, at a half-mile, 15Mb DSL could be available.

It is wireless broadband.

I don't have a telephone line so I never looked into DSL. I had SBC DSL when I was in college and ****ing hated it. It was ****ing down all the time. And their customer service was beyond atrocious. I don't know if it was just SBC, but I'm a little gunshy about picking up a phone line just for dsl.

Yeah, unfortunately that's life with most RBOC service. I had the same experience with Qwest/US West.

If you could get something like U-Verse or FIOS, you might have a better experience.

I was unbelievably frustrated with SBC. I should have known from the getgo though. When I signed up, I said I want local service only. She went through a bunch of crap they offered. I said, "no. I want local service only". Before I hung up the phone, I verified that all I had was local service with no additional options, features, or plans. She said yes. Along comes my bill with the hookup charge I expected, the local service, and $70 of other shit that she verified that I didn't get. I didn't have to pay for it, but it was certainly a precursor to what was to come. That and I kept getting collection calls for a bankrupt business.

I live in BFE so that stuff may not be available.

What is U-Verse and FIOS. I'm not familiar.

Please forgive my stupidity.

I tried that. They treat their employees worse than their customers.

TWC raised mine from $140 to $190 in one month (admittedly, the first year incentive package had ended, but of course they didn't let me know it was over). I called to see if I could get it brought back down to about the same as I'd been paying, loyal cable customer that I am. They said no- I said fine, then I just want RoadRunner and nothing else- brought the bill down to $50/mo. By not showing they'd work with me on a more reasonable bill, they lost over $100 in monthly revenue. Screw the greedy b**tards.

This pushed me to drop the landline and cable TV and replace them with my existing Sprint cellphone lines and Netflix. We're happy as clams.
