There's no shortage of G and PG-rated movies that have appeal to both kids and adults, that's what I'm really saying.

The prequels were bad because they were bad, it doesn't have anything to do with targetting kids. Just do a better job with VII-IX and I think it's entirely possible to make movies that reach both audiences (prequels vs OT). Hell, as far as box office goes, they'll sell themselves just with the Star Wars name. Make them actually good and they'll blow the prequel receipts out of the water.

I don't like their animation. It's looks too "X-Box" for my taste.

I agree. The material and acting just have to be better. There are adults who(for reasons I can't imagine)get off on watching shit like "Cars".

Maybe it's the awesome talent of Larry The Cable Guy?

But how many well known "Live Action" brands have a massive appeal to both 4 year olds and 40 year olds?

Say what you will about the prequels but it wasn't just 4 year olds that generated $2.5 billion at the box office, millions more in DVD and Blu-Ray, etc.

IF Episode VII can pull off the unthinkable, like a $1 Billlion Dollar Live Action Pixar movie that appeals to young and old alike, it'll be the first time in history.

Really? Even films like Toy Story 3, Monster's Inc., Wall-E and The Incredibles?

May I ask what kind of TV/DVR player you've viewed said movies? It makes all the difference in the world, IMO, to see them not only in 1080i HD on an LED or LCD but even a bigger jump once they're Blu-Ray.

I about crapped my pants the first time I saw Rango on Blu-Ray on my 65" Sharp Aquos LCD at Christmas time 2012. The blacks were soooooooooo black, which made everything pop.

It's strange that you keep bringing up that 2.5 billion box office number like it actually means anything. I know that you know that if you adjust for inflation the original trilogy outgrosses the prequels by more than a billion dollars in the US alone. The Star Wars brand is the only reason the prequels made any money.

As far as a live action brand with a massive appeal to both 4 year olds and 40 year olds, isn't that what Star Wars has always been, going all the way back to '77?

I was at the Comcast office not too long ago, and they were playing one of their movies on a huge flat. Some movie about a little red-headed witch. The whole thing looked like a video game cut scene.

Yeah, it's irrelevant.

But the case can be made that home theater didn't exist, HDTV didn't exist, Blu-Ray didn't exist and times were different altogether.

Furthermore, that's untrue. When The Phantom Menace was released in 3D, it did some nice numbers, like $45 million domestically.

But no one's been able to capture that since.

FTR, George Lucas started Pixar.

Yes, I'm saying it's irrelevant. Because the Star Wars brand is the reason for that box office success, not the films themselves. You'll see the exact same thing with the new trilogy.

Home theater didn't exist? How many different versions of the original trilogy were released before the prequels even came out, on VHS/Beta, Laserdisk, eventually on DVD and now on Blu-Ray. There was an 80s special edition, a 90s special edition, the 2011 blu-ray special edition, and there'll I'm sure be another edition at some point when the next video technology hits (whatever that ends up being). And they played back in the 80s (IIRC) on network TV, USA and on HBO. There's never been any lick of home saturation when it comes to Star Wars, along with comics, novels, video games, etc. That established brand has to be large part of the reason the prequels made money.

(And lets be honest, when we say the prequels made money, let's just say TPM made money. Ep 3 made 200 million less and Ep 2 400 million less. The first one had steam from being the first new Star Wars film in decades, it sucked so Ep 2 struggled, and then Ep 3 did a little better because people wanted to see Anakin become Vader).

Everything those movies made were thanks to the original trilogy, which, again, completely destroyed them at the box office if you adjust for inflation, if we're going to be stuck with talking about box office as some vain effort to characterize awful movies as something not awful based on commercial success thanks to brand name.

But you do concede that it existed. So it wouldn't be the first time...

I don't actually care about Pixar, and I'm not trying to equate SW to it, it was just the first name that came to mind.

Wasn't there a show about HOW the original Star Wars appealed to so many in 1977? IIRC, they had a couple of shrinks talking about ho the country was stuck in a post Vietnam malaise, then SW came around and basically blew everyone away by being so far removed from anything anyone had ever seen before.

Anybody else remember that show?

They were expecting more apparently, because I'm right pissed off that we never got to see the original trilogy in 3D.

I hope they do a 2D re-release, at least, before 2015.

It's *possible* it was in standard def. Also, Comcast compresses their signal, so you're not seeing true HD (or Blu-Ray) for that matter.

Conversely, maybe you've seen them in Blu ray and don't care for the picture.

Everyone has a different aesthetic, so please know that I'm not passing judgement.
