Miami's Martin leaves team after 'emotional breakdown'

Jonathan Martin leaves Dolphins after 'breakdown'

By Dan Hanzus
Around the League Writer
Published: Oct. 30, 2013 at 06:39 p.m. Updated: Oct. 30, 2013 at 07:00 p.m.
An unusual situation is unfolding in Miami, where Dolphins right tackle Jonathan Martin has left the team after suffering an "emotional breakdown" this week.

NFL Media's Jeff Darlington reported Wednesday that Martin is currently seeking help with his family after an incident at the team's cafeteria, according to team sources.

Martin is listed on the team's injury report with an illness, and is doubtful to play Thursday against the Cincinnati Bengals. Fox NFL insider Jay Glazer reported that Martin was the victim of a prank at the cafeteria, becoming enraged enough to "smash his food tray on the ground."

The second-year pro has not been with the team since that time. Darlington reports that Martin immediately sought treatment at a local hospital. He has since left the hospital and is now spending time with his family, according to team sources.

Martin opened the season as the Dolphins' replacement for Jake Long at left tackle. He was moved to right tackle when the team acquired Bryant McKinnie via trade last week. Tyson Clabo is expected to start in Martin's place on Thursday.

You think anybody tells Ray Lewis / Ndamukung Suh / etc. the stuff they were saying to Martin? Of course not. Those guys would bash your face into a sink until you had no teeth left and then start the beating. But Martin WAS a pussy, by NFL-locker room standards, and he wasn't mentally equipped to take it (obviously).

But that doesn't excuse Incognito in any way. He's obviously a turd of a human being, and deserves what he got, and to have his career end in ignominy.
I don't disagree. He seems like an immature, juvenile thug.

It isn't acceptable, but it sounds like the guy didn't have the mental and physical toughness to deal with playing in the nfl. If he's intimidated by neanderthals in his own locker room how's he supposed to deal with Terrell Suggs on Sunday?

I wonder if Incognito stopped teasing the trainer after being told to stop.
if you had to go to work/school EVERY day knowing that you would be scared all day and have to deal with bullying shit, you might think different.

I imagine it built up over time.

In read each of the 144 pages in the report.

Incognito, Jerry, and Pouncey are certainly not absolved of any wrong doing as the released text messages might make us believe.

Perhaps, I wouldn't know.

But, I do find it a little comical that a guy who pushed people around as his profession didn't chose to push back more forcefully. There are always going to be assholes. How you deal with them is up to you.

No disagreement, but I just wonder now if Martin wishes he had fought back, even if it meant an ass kicking, instead of having the mess that exists now.

After reading the report, it would appear he approached this subject with his parents. He complained to them that he was being 'punked'. His father told him he dealt with bullies by punching one in the face and kicking another in the balls.

I'll bet he wishes he had stood up for himself now.

He actually talks about that in the report and anguishes over it. Texts between his mom and him talk about how he's been like that since an early age. That in middle school, even though he was bigger than everyone else, he'd let people **** with him and just smile and take it because he was more concerned with them liking him. He was afraid if he fought back and struck out at them, they wouldn't like him. It's a pretty common issue with big guys who are usually clumsy and awkward at a young age, as such they get conditioned in a certain way to be big babies.

What lead you to that leap?

I wouldn't say RI is a victim, he just wasn't attuned to JM's sensitivity.

Probably Q, but we have a smaller scale version of this dynamic in my immediate family. We all remember every stupid thing the others have said or done and we get on jags of breaking balls over it until we can't see from tears rolling laughing.

Grandma sees this from the outside and gets very irritated about how mean we are to each other.

All of this falls on the Dolphins front office and coaching staff.

When Zack Greinke returned to the majors after taking a year off to deal to seek help for his struggles with social anxiety, no one on Chiefsplanet was calling Zack a pu**y, to the contrary, they were calling both he and the Royals FO heroic for the way they came together to find a solution for Zack's struggle.

This is all on the Dolphins coaches for tolerating and encouraging Incognito's behavior.

All of you calling a Martin a pu**y should be ashamed of yourselves, the act victim blaming is absolutely inexcusable and runs rampant through our society. If he were your child, you would have sided with Martin each and every time. Kudos to Jonathan for seeking help before it was too late.
