Planning Colorado Trip

We are planning a Colorado vacation in July. Attendees are my wife, two kids(3 year old, 6 month old), and inlaws. We will be driving from Johnson County, and have the following considerations in mind:

*Score some good bud/edibles
*See beautiful views
*Ability to be in a town, but also see nature
*Not add too much time to our drive as it already is

So far Colorado Springs sounds like a good destination , but I was hoping for some input from our resident Colorado folks. I have never been and am really excited!

Colorado Springs is nice and has some hikes to do (Garden of the Gods). However, I would probably recommend Estes Park, which is up in the mountains near Rocky Mountain National Park. It has a quaint little downtown area where I’m sure you could find things to do with your family.

I wouldn't recommend Co Springs. Go to places like Estes Park. If you like beer, well there's no shortage of craft beer on every street corner in Colorado.

Hang out more north and west of Co Springs. Springs might be good for just a 1 day hangout at the most. Check out Garden of the Gods, then get on to the better part of Colorado.

I agree the Colorado Springs is good for a few days (Garden of the Gods, Cave of the Winds, Pikes Peak, Seven Falls, and Manitou Springs). Ultimately there are nicer things outside of here though, especially if you head NW of Denver (Estes Park, Rocky Mountain National Park, Steamboat Springs etc....) or head SW of here and check out Great Sand Dunes National Park.

3 year old and 6 month old? SMH why bother?

Edit: Sorry, I missed the in-laws part.

The Sand Dunes National Park is quite the site to behold.

The Cottonwood Hot Springs was a fantastic place to stay despite extremely spotty internet service out there. We purposefully slept during the day and then enjoyed the hot springs once everyone else had gone away.

NW of Denver up in Estes and Nederland is beautiful area.

For bud... I can recommend the House of Dankness which is in NE Denver. They usually have great daily deals and their bud is excellent. Shatter deals on Wednesday and Friday ($12.50 per grams for bud extracted). $15 for eights on Wed and Friday as well, usually. Depending when I harvest... you can even get some from my garden if you would like.

The Wife and I took a vacation to Colorado back in 2000. I HIGHLY recommend going up Pike's Peak. Then, head up the Independence Pass (Beautiful). We went in late September and the views were stunning. You'll come out, at the other end near Aspen. Nice tourist town and, in the summer, should be relatively easy to find good hotels.

We left there and went out to I-70 and headed to Vail. The night we stayed there, our room was (something) like $120. The Clerk told us that the next day - that same room would be $400 per night,

Fort Collins is nice if you like traffic jams. Head up to Estes Park - you'll like it. then go across to Breckinridge. Another tourist/ski town, but in July they always have concerts and the like going on. After that? get the hell away from I-25. It's a death trap.

As for the pot shops - they are all over Dungver....if that's your thing. Understand, kids will have to stay outside (thankfully).

I'm not personally much a fan of Estes Park (too touristy), but if you've got a crew like yours, it's probably a good choice. Lots of activities in town for the kids, and right outside Rocky Mountain National Park. If you have more than 4 days, you could consider doing Estes for a few days and then going down to the Springs. Colorado Springs is good for pure tourist stuff (Cave of the Winds, Garden of the Gods, Pikes Peak, Cheyenne Mountain Zoo, and maybe the Manitou Cliff Dwellings), but I don't think you get anywhere near the breathtaking views there that you'd get driving through RMNP.

What kinds of activities are you into? Mostly sightseeing, pure tourist attractions, hiking, camping, etc.?

I've got a busy day today (go Avs!) but I'll try to chime in if everyone else doesn't take care of my thoughts before I get to it.

Minor warning on Pikes Peak - the cog railway is closed and may never open again. The drive up is still fun, but I'll miss the train if they can't get it going again.

When will the road to the top open? Same with Mt. Evans... been dying to take the motorcycle up there.

On second thought, if you DO plan on going to Estes - I would suggest going to Loveland and heading up 34 Highway. As I recall, that is a much more scenic drive into the park. While we were there, we saw many Elk and a couple of mountain lions on rocks sunning themselves. No worries, though, we were about 800 yards from them on the roadway. At the top - there is a decent restaurant and gift shoppe.

I was back in Colorado Springs for a workshop back in 2012 and stayed at the Broadmoor. Damned fine hotel - but plan on spending big bucks if you plan on staying there.
