Connecticut school shooting: 18 children among 27 dead

'Close to 20' dead in Connecticut school shooting, source says
Newtown, Connecticut (CNN) -- Nearly 20 people died Friday in an elementary school shooting in Newtown, Connecticut, a law enforcement source with knowledge of the investigation told CNN.

At least 10 of the dead at Sandy Hook Elementary School were children, the source said. At a news conference Friday afternoon, state police Lt. Paul Vance would say only that there had been "several fatalities."

The school was secure, and the public was not in danger, Vance said.

"Why? Why?" one woman wailed as she walked up a wooded roadway leading from the school.

A parent who was inside the school at the time of the attack said she heard what sounded like at least 100 rounds being fired. She said she saw two school employees who had died.

'I hope my mom is ok': Tweets from the Connecticut school shooting

Hospital officials in neighboring Danbury said they were treating three people wounded in the shooting. Danbury Mayor Mark Boughton said the victims were in "very serious" condition.

The shooter is dead, a source with knowledge of the investigation told CNN's Susan Candiotti. The suspect's body is in a classroom at the school, the source said.

A law enforcement source with knowledge of the investigation said a male was being questioned but he is not being called a suspect.

Federal officers in tactical gear were on the scene, coordinating with local and state police. At least four ambulances remained at the school Friday afternoon.

Police have recovered two weapons from the suspect, a Glock and a Sig Sauer, the source said. It's unclear if police killed the suspect.

'It doesn't seem possible' -- parents shocked by school shooting

Police and teachers rushed students from the building as police swarmed the area shortly after the first calls came in, around 9:40 a.m. ET. Officials moved students to a nearby firehouse, where parents frantically sought information about their children.

Third-grader Alexis Wasik said police and teachers barged into her classroom and told students to hide in the corner.

"Everybody was crying," she said. "And I just heard the police officers yelling."

Aerial images from CNN affiliate News 12 New Jersey showed police officers armed with rifles following a dog into woods near the school.

Other officers, some in tactical gear, stood around the school with guns drawn, CNN affiliate WFSB reported.

All schools in the city were on lockdown Friday as police assessed the situation, Vance said.

Gov. Dan Malloy is "horrified" by what happened, a spokesman said.

White House spokesman Jay Carney said the Obama administration feels "enormous sympathy" for affected families and pledged federal support for state and local law enforcement.

Newtown is about 60 miles north of New York.

Oh I couldn't agree with you more. My job is working with youth who have committed crimes. We get to their core issues (why they ended up committing crimes, using drugs etc). Give them all the empathaty and understanding in the world. Let them talk about ALL of their issues They don't refer to our agency and what we do as the "Missouri Miracle" for nothing.

There WERE warning signs. Somebody missed them or simply ignored them. There is no way someone does something like this without warning signs.

My guess is he is a pure sociopath with no empathy. Lived a life with few friends and no real prospects or future. Lived at home with parents who grew increasingly more and more frustrated with him. Maybe he was in trouble all the time, and eventually decided if he was going to be treated like a bad person, he'd become one. Killed his mom, decided that wasn't a horrible enough thing to do, so he went to the nearest elementary school and killed as many of the cutest, youngest kids as he could and then offed himself. There might not be any other answer than that.

I've been watching the news today and following some of the responses of others to this. I am still at a loss for words. This whole thing is just so ****ed up on so many levels. My thoughts and prayers go out to the parents of the children killed.

too much crap to go back and quote everyone, but I want to give my 2 cents on the whole prayer thing.

I don't pray, I don't go to church and I don't believe. I used to, but I don't now. Not sure why and I know it's not really important right now.

But why do some non believers feel so threatened by believers? Stevie says something to the effect of praying, during and after. To believers it helps with understanding, even if it's just at least a coping mechanism.

If someone says they'll pray for you, just say thanks even if you don't believe. That's my thinking. If someone says praying will help, don't say praying doesn't change anything. How do you know? How do you know that person praying doesn't help them deal with the situation better. Think clearer, react faster and get the kids in one classroom near the shooting hidden and protected from harm, when otherwise - something else could have happened.

I don't believe, that's my own choice for my own reasons. I'm not going to tell you you are right to agree with me on that or wrong for disagreeing. But even I can see positives to praying if it helps someone even a little. So why does the thought of prayer make some people jump on the offensive?

Hell, for all we know - midgets might be deities. And anyone who came on here believing that midget love could cause some dramatic karmic shift in their mortal soul would have more respect than someone saying they are a Christian.

From what I gather he had a history of mental problems. I've seen mentions of Asperger's. Also an anecdote that he was incapable of feeling physical pain, the anecdote related to a youth sports team he was part of where special care had to be taken to help him avoid injury. I believe it was a baseball team. To me this would imply substantial neurological problems.

Reportedly his mom was a teacher at one time (as was his father in a different capacity) but stopped teaching so she could stay home to take care of him. His parents were divorced (which caused him emotional trauma) and his father wealthy, his father was supplying approximately $240,000 to his mother annually in financial support. According to the information I have read, the divorce was handled without bitterness between his parents and his father voluntarily set up support payments that were in excess of what the court ordered.

He has been described as very intelligent, but emotionally and socially stunted. There have been statements made from people who claim to know him, from his neighborhood and school days, that he was obviously not well adjusted. As of right now the story I am hearing is that he stole his mother's guns, used them to kill her in their home, then proceeded to the school where the incident took place.

I have heard rumors that some people are saying that his mom worked as a substitute teacher at the school and that he may have attended that school at one time. To the best of my knowledge these are unsubstantiated and the authorities are still trying to find a connection that would tie him to this particular school.

I agree as well to a point. It seems that a number of these situations especially where Aspergers is suspected happen AFTER they are out of high school. While they are in school even if there are not particularly helpful school counselors there are people who are watching this child every day and keeping track of their behavior (if even off the record) and noting changes in it. Teachers know who these kids are. Students know who these kids are. It's never a big mystery. After they leave high school they are young adults having a hard time transitioning from dependent to independent. Also, once they are 18 their health and medication records are no longer automatically accessible to their parents. They no longer have any control (minus court action) over the care of their child.

That means often times the child loses or stops attending counseling and stops with medications. So while the child might have been weird but harmless during the school aged years they are now young adults under no or severely reduced monitoring and care. I think this needs to change. Somehow make it so that parents can have easier access to young adults medical records especially if they are providing the insurance. Maybe until age 25.

I don't believe the medications themselves are completely at fault here as some are advocating on this thread. Perhaps the introduction and then subsequent withdraw of them might be but it's too early to say that medications are completely to blame. I'm sure the gun lobby will be happy to point the finger at another huge (and dangerous, IMO) lobby, Big Pharma.

Another thing, who in their right mind has a mentally ill family member and an arsenal of guns under the same roof? The mother lost her life at the hands of guns that were apparently (if you believe the marketing campaigns) there to protect her. Maybe this will be a wake up call for other families living under the same conditions.

Bottom line is there are no easy answers here. Not only will gun issues need to face scrutiny but also mental health issues. There is a tremendous amount of denial going on in both areas and it's only horrific occasions like this do we see any attempt to address it. Unfortunately, the past indicates it will be short lived and unproductive until the next shooting. Rinse and repeat.
