Connecticut school shooting: 18 children among 27 dead

'Close to 20' dead in Connecticut school shooting, source says
Newtown, Connecticut (CNN) -- Nearly 20 people died Friday in an elementary school shooting in Newtown, Connecticut, a law enforcement source with knowledge of the investigation told CNN.

At least 10 of the dead at Sandy Hook Elementary School were children, the source said. At a news conference Friday afternoon, state police Lt. Paul Vance would say only that there had been "several fatalities."

The school was secure, and the public was not in danger, Vance said.

"Why? Why?" one woman wailed as she walked up a wooded roadway leading from the school.

A parent who was inside the school at the time of the attack said she heard what sounded like at least 100 rounds being fired. She said she saw two school employees who had died.

'I hope my mom is ok': Tweets from the Connecticut school shooting

Hospital officials in neighboring Danbury said they were treating three people wounded in the shooting. Danbury Mayor Mark Boughton said the victims were in "very serious" condition.

The shooter is dead, a source with knowledge of the investigation told CNN's Susan Candiotti. The suspect's body is in a classroom at the school, the source said.

A law enforcement source with knowledge of the investigation said a male was being questioned but he is not being called a suspect.

Federal officers in tactical gear were on the scene, coordinating with local and state police. At least four ambulances remained at the school Friday afternoon.

Police have recovered two weapons from the suspect, a Glock and a Sig Sauer, the source said. It's unclear if police killed the suspect.

'It doesn't seem possible' -- parents shocked by school shooting

Police and teachers rushed students from the building as police swarmed the area shortly after the first calls came in, around 9:40 a.m. ET. Officials moved students to a nearby firehouse, where parents frantically sought information about their children.

Third-grader Alexis Wasik said police and teachers barged into her classroom and told students to hide in the corner.

"Everybody was crying," she said. "And I just heard the police officers yelling."

Aerial images from CNN affiliate News 12 New Jersey showed police officers armed with rifles following a dog into woods near the school.

Other officers, some in tactical gear, stood around the school with guns drawn, CNN affiliate WFSB reported.

All schools in the city were on lockdown Friday as police assessed the situation, Vance said.

Gov. Dan Malloy is "horrified" by what happened, a spokesman said.

White House spokesman Jay Carney said the Obama administration feels "enormous sympathy" for affected families and pledged federal support for state and local law enforcement.

Newtown is about 60 miles north of New York.

He has been described as very intelligent, but emotionally and socially stunted. There have been statements made from people who claim to know him, from his neighborhood and school days, that he was obviously not well adjusted. As of right now the story I am hearing is that he stole his mother's guns, used them to kill her in their home, then proceeded to the school where the incident took place.

.
For people who have no idea what this looks like imagine a severe case of Sheldon Cooper without the ability to make friends, have a roommate, a girlfriend, hold a job, understand humor, experience empathy, and being unreachable to change any of it.

Of course, the sitcom makes this all funny because Sheldon is as well adjusted as one could hope for given his limitations but imagine how hard life would be for someone like that without people around him who are able to help him cope. He is hopelessly dependent on the people around him.

Yesterday afternoon after a weekly sales meeting, I was driving home in my car and listening to the radio about this. When Obama spoke about the tragedy it really got to me and I would up crying in the car. I have no children but it was hard not to feel incredible pain and sadness about how awful and senseless this stupid event is.

Well, right now I'm only worried about my head. Trying to wrap it around this. We know that this isn't the last evil thing that's going to happen by any means. Everybody has to make their own choice.

Yeah, Obama was very helpful to a lot of people yesterday...no question.

All of us are ripped up right now, and by demonstrating that he gave a good example that it's ok to feel that way.

my hour and 1/2 commute yesterday felt so much longer as I left CT to MA. All I wanted to do was get home and hug my 3 small school aged children. I too listened to the radio and at points it took all I had not to break down and cry.

Not embarrassed at all to say that either. I work about 1 hour from this town in CT. Our associates are rocked by this news and we all are having trouble understanding this.

We're not going to end gun violence. I'm all about the second amendment but buying a gun shouldn't be easier than purchasing and registering a car (not even including getting a drivers license and getting insurance).

There needs to be more checks and balances to keep guns away from felons and the mentally ill. If we adopted the same policies as Canada or Australia, modest steps would be taken that could save up to 10,000 lives each year.

Local teen accused of planning mass school shooting

Even as investigators were unravelling the tragic events surrounding shootings at a Connecticut school on Friday, Bartlesville police were working to prevent a similar occurrence at the local high school.

Police have arrested an 18-year-old for allegedly planning a mass shooting at Bartlesville High School.

Sammie Eaglebear Chavez is in custody and was being held on a $1 million bond on charges of conspiracy to perform an act of violence involving serious bodily harm or death threats-devising plan, scheme or program of action to cause serious bodily harm or death.

According to a probable cause affidavit filed Friday in district court, Layne Jones, assistant principal for the high school, alerted the Bartlesville Police Department on Thursday that there had been “possible threats toward the student body by a student.”

Reportedly, a student confirmed to authorities that he had been in the cafeteria on Dec. 12 and that Chavez “tried to recruit other students to assist him with carrying out a plan to lure students into the school auditorium where he planned to begin shooting them after chaining the doors shut,” the affidavit states.

Chavez reportedly further said that if the students that were assisting him did not do as they were supposed to do that “he would not hesitate to kill them and/or himself.”

Police say he additionally said that he planned to “place bombs by the doors so when the police arrived he would detonate the bombs, killing the police as they entered the building.”

Authorities contend that Chavez had been attempting to obtain a map or diagram of the building. Chavez had reportedly told a teacher that “he had recently purchased a Colt .45 handgun and spent the weekend shooting it.”

Police further allege that Chavez had performed Internet searches for a “.22 caliber rifle on a machine gun platform” on school computers as recent as Nov. 30, as well as information on “how to build pipe bombs” and information on “the Columbine High School Massacre.”

Authorities reportedly located Chavez around 4:50 a.m. Friday at a residence on Adeline in west Bartlesville. He was taken into custody at that time and a search was conducted of the residence.

When contacted Friday, BPD Capt. Jay Hastings said police are uncertain whether there will be further arrests.

“The investigation continues and we still have a lot of interviews to do,” he said.

Bartlesville Public School District officials could not be reached for comment, but issued a statement late Friday stating that administrators contacted police in response to a “rumor in which a current Bartlesville High School student was planning to potentially harm students and staff” at the school.

“School administrators took the information extremely seriously and informed the Bartlesville Police Department of the alleged plan. The student alleged to be planning to harm others was not at Bartlesville High School yesterday and no students were ever in danger,” the release states.

“We are extremely pleased that our students were never in harm’s way. I am proud of our administrative personnel who took what started out as an unsubstantiated rumor, and through their diligent work and exhaustive investigation were able to determine there could be a future threat,” said BPSD Superintendent Dr. Gary W. Quinn.

“We appreciate the excellent relationship we have with our local law enforcement and their swift response to the information we provided them. We will always put the safety of the students of the Bartlesville Public School District first and foremost.”

According to the release, school officials are working with the BPD on the case.

“The District continues to encourage students and others to inform school administrators or the local police of any rumors of any potential act to harm students or staff. The District will make every effort to fully investigate and take every precaution to make the Bartlesville Public School District a safe environment for everyone,” the release states.

Parents of BPSD students and district employees were notified of a possible incident via email just before noon on Friday: “In an effort to communicate with you, we would like to make you aware that we had a potential incident yesterday at Bartlesville High School which we investigated thoroughly. The information acquired was forwarded to the Bartlesville Police Department and was dealt with in an appropriate manner. Due to (confidentiality) restrictions, no further information will be released at this time. Please know that the safety of our students and staff is always of our utmost concern.”

You don't know how tempting that is even for someone like me. I'm in staunch opposition to mixing Christian concepts with school curriculum and I'd still consider it if my kids weren't just about out of school. How do you handle the issue of socialization? I mean that my kids, especially my daughter, seems to need that socialization that comes with being part of a student body.
