New Kindles announced.

Amazon is kicking serious ass with this new product line at these prices. I'm really impressed.

The also have some pretty neat new features like FreeTime to let you set limits on children's usage of the tablet.

That didn't last long. Support person obviously wasn't in the loop. Can't opt out. I have the kindle with special offers and it really isn't that intrusive at all being on the lock screen. So not a big deal to me.

Do your kids read books on their Fires? If so, what is the screen quality like? Good enough?

My wife does (and I do on my tablet). They're about the same in terms of quality. That is, I don't mind reading off of a screen, but it can be a little tough to see when you're in a bright area - especially if you've got a lot of artificial lights around. In that case, the glare gets to be a bit annoying.

I read on my fire all the time. It'd be worthless outside during the day, but it's great especially at night in the dark.

Thanks Face. Does reading a book on the Kindle ever make her/your eyes hurt?

My oldest daughter could read a 300-page book in a week or less. After getting the Fire, he reading volume went UP. She loves it. Hardly ever puts it down.

In fact, she never used to read in the car because it made her queasy. Not so with the Kindle, she reads on it all the time in the car.

Just what I wanted to know, thanks. And this is the Fire were' talking about, not the regular Kindle, yes?

My daughter wants a "Kindle Fire" for her birthday. I had to look up what the **** that was today. So, it's basically like an e-reader thing?

Not really, the e-reader is the Kindle PaperWhite.. the Fire is a full on tablet. Of course, it can be used as an e-reader.

Looks like Amazon wasn't originally planning to let people opt out, but decided to do so after the backlash. $15 (one-time) = no ads.

If it's like the ereaders, it's not intrusive at all. I've got an ad-supported Kindle Touch. Ads are only on the screensaver and the home menu screen at the very bottom. None at all when I'm reading. Doesn't bother me in the slightest. As a matter of fact, you pretty quickly get ad blindness to it since they're in the same spot every time.

Correct. At the time we bought them, they were the top-of-the-line unit.

I guess the embargoes got lifted, as a lot of the big tech sites have reviews up now.
