If the Chiefs go 8-8 or better 49ers get a 2nd round pick.

A third- or second-rounder from Kansas City, the remnant of the Alex Smith deal. Now it can be told: The second draft choice San Francisco will receive from the Smith deal will be K.C.'s second-rounder in 2014 if the Chiefs go 8-8 or better this season. It will be a third-rounder in 2014 if Kansas City is under .500 this season.

So: San Francisco will probably have first-, second- and four third-rounders next year. But if the Chiefs surprise, it'll more likely be a one, two twos and three threes. As we've seen, GM Trent Baalke is dangerous with extra picks in his hands. If Colin Kaepernick is very good, the Niners should be annual contenders for years with the picks laid out that way.

We didn't pass on a top prospect, because there were none.
Every team in the NFL passed on Alex Smith when he was a free agent, we gave up two second round picks for him and you are ok with it...

I think if the Chiefs go st lesst 8-8 with Smith at the helm then it was a great trade.

Kaepernick really didn't do THAT much differently than Smith.. but he does have freakish ability to separate himself from a pass rusher and take off like he's got 4.3 speed.

You should try and understand that (again) our offense was just evolving in Alex's first two years of Jim's new system. When Kaepernick came in, things were much more ironed out and everyone was getting the hang of things. Defenses also knew Kaepernick was gifted.. but they underestimated just how gifted, and he made them pay.

He did fail when it most counted though... and it's all speculative, but I doubt Alex would have sailed that endzone pass to Crabtree... nor would he have checked out of two runs and passed the ball to the wrong targets when there were others open. He'll learn... but ouch.

Harbaugh trusted Alex to teach his system to the players and get that offense started. Then, he pulled Alex the first chance he got (concussion) to put the more dynamic QB in... his QB... when things were settling in.

KC got a good QB to help get them going. Will Alex be more than that stop-gap? Maybe yes... maybe no. He is a good QB though... but if you or others are intent on this Chicken Little approach? Hey... do proceed.

Just how the **** do you or any one else know that in three years that Geno Smith isn't one of the top rated quarterbacks in the league? I'm not Nostradamus. How many teams passed on Dan ****ing Marino? For what ever reason he drop in the draft that does not mean he can't be or wont be successful. He may take a few years to develop, he may struggle before the lights come on. Eli Manning had a tough start for himself and he turned out ok. The point is that Geno Smith has all the talent in the world to be successful, but it is going to determination and hard work that is going make or break him in the NFL. I believe the Jets got a motivated football player that knows he has to fight for the job if he wants it bad enough he will get it.

Motivation is the key factor for Geno Smith to be successful that is the unmeasurable that the 32 teams can't see in his heart. The perception of Geno Smith in the league is that Geno Smith is a deva. He didn't help himself out by not going to the senior bowl I think that was a big mistake.

He could flame out but I still would have loved to watch to see for myself him as a Chief be taken with 1.1 to find out if he is a stud or not. Now another team is going find out for themselves and we missed an opportunity.

Because 32 teams were so smart that they passed on Tom Brady for 6 rounds. Huh.

This type of $hit that reminds me of... myself. Defending Elvis Grbac on the KC Star board nearly 20 years ago. My only defense is that I was 15.

alex smith was sitting there and would have cost a team no pick compensation.

then he resigns with SF, gets benched, and we trade two #2 picks for him.

people that are happy about that, or even ok with it, shouldnt be throwing stones about geno...

Alex Smith was the first player taken at 1.1, but Aaron Rodgers was past on by 23 teams and was pick 24th by the packers and went on to win a couple Super Bowls.

I can understand that, but you are not 15 anymore. You should appreciate that just because "you missed" on one assessment in the past and "your boy" failed... that doesn't mean that every other move made will fail.

This is a quitter's mentality. Remember when you were 14, and a girl broke your heart? Did you forever after give up on the fairer sex and become parthenogenetic?

Five myths about the 49ers, Alex Smith and the future

Quote:
3.) Smith was a free agent last season and there was no market for him.
Yes, Smith technically was a free agent in 2012, but there needs to be a large asterisk next to that designation. Everyone in the league assumed the 49ers would re-sign Smith because the 49ers said they would do so - Remember Jim Harbaugh-heart-Alex Smith at Pebble Beach last year? - and because Smith said he wanted to be back. It was only when the 49ers offered Smith a mediocre deal and pursued Peyton Manning that Smith figured he ought to make himself available on the open market. But that was nearly a week into free agency, and most teams already had made their plans.

That is dumb if another team wanted Alex Smith they would have forked over the money or push his price up. It still stands that no other team wanted him last year.

Crazy that the No. 1, No. 2, and No. 4 overall picks will all play right tackle this season.
