BOT Chair Haggard out at FSU

Regardless of what some of their fans want, I think FSU (President/faculty/athletic department) wants to stay in the ACC.

Yep, It's going to be BCS moving forward.

Throw in a few more teams but essentially it will be people picking teams to compete and not really a "playoff".

This writer is ignorant. His 2-year term as chair and 5-year term as member ended with the conclusion of the meeting, which had been planned long before this realignment drama. He could not continue as chair even if they wanted to. He could have been reappointed by the governor if the governor wanted to, but the governor usually wants to get their own political friends and allies in, and the new guy is a former speaker of the FL house.

Also, its an unpaid volunteer gig and these guys are busy, they usually don't want to serve more than 1 or 2 5-year terms anyway. Chairmen usually like to go out with a bang, not step down and continue to serve as a mere member when their 2-year chairmanship ends.

Big picture, you don't go on "fact-finding missions" or urge the board to really examine the costs and benefits of moving to the Big 12 if it isn't going to happen or if Haggard went rogue. Haggard did say the board was unanimous in their interest, the FSU president acted yesterday like he was pleading to the whole board to be careful and think it through. How often do you shop around for a new car or go on a date if you aren't thinking about buying a new car or getting a divorce?

ACC gives money to FSU to erase their budget shortfall. Why would they do that if FSU was leaving?

http://www.tallahassee.com/article/2...nclick_check=1

Quote:
The projected $2.4-million shortfall within Florida State’s athletics budget is apparently gone.

FSU athletic director Randy Spetman told the university’s Board of Trustees that additional money from the Atlantic Coast Conference helped erase the shortfall.

“On June 1, we got an extra $1.6 million (from the ACC),” Spetman said. “That put (the conference payout) right at over $16 million, which we thought would be $14.1 million.

“Our budget is balanced for this year and we’ll be in good shape for next year also.”
FSU’s athletics board had previously submitted a budget for 2012-13 that included a $14.1 million distribution from the ACC. FSU officials learned late last week that payout would increase as year-end adjustments were made.

Apparently the ACC was very conservative in its estimate on how much they'd be able to distribute, and so FSU used that conservative estimate which put them in the red.

The ACC didn't cut FSU a bonus check, EVERY team in the conference got the same money.

Direct quote to a writer from the FSU rivals site, from a BOT member on the condition of anonymity (regarding the merits of staying vs going): "We could be falling behind by tens of millions of dollars,"

Nope, nothing to see there. FSU is a proud member of the ACC.

Regarding Haggard, looks like I incorrectly relied on another poster's highly flawed "analysis". His term on the board continues through 2015.

He could have run for chair again and as late as 4 days ago, a newspaper article said he hadn't made up his mind yet, but he had pretty much unanimous support to continue from the rest of the BOT. Today he apparently had enough of the spotlight. It was Haggard who nominated the new chair and asked the rest of the board to support him, he'll continue on as a member.

Apparently there's going to be some expose in the Tallahassee paper on Sunday regarding the football program's spending. Could be something or a lot of nothing.

yeah, FSU fans have been grumbling for a few days, already pre-emptively calling it a "hit piece" before it came out. The newspaper put out some sort of article hinting that it was coming and that FSU fans would be unhappy and would probably circle the wagons and attack the paper for it, but for the sake of journalism they had to push forward.

From what I could see, they are going to try to make the argument that FSU's athletic department wastes a bunch of money, but I'd need to see a fair comparison with other similar schools, because when you look at the USA Today data that came out a month or so ago, FSU's expenses didn't seem out of line with their peers. Unless they want to argue that EVERY major BCS school is wasteful, which would be a harder sell.

Yeah, I saw some of the preview stuff and one of the arguments against comparing it to other schools was to the like of just because others jump off a bridge doesn't mean you have to as well. Lame argument, IMO, and makes me question whether the piece is just a bunch of hot air.

Are those departments in debt?

Overspending can cause the entire AD to be in debt.

I mean the other schools. It's one thing to waste money if you have it to waste. It's another thing I if you're going into debt.

Gotcha. Many successful programs (see Florida and Texas) the AD's are very profitably and donate money back to the school.

Almost all of them are, if you get rid of direct subsidies from the state and student fees. Texas and roughly 20 other athletic departments are profitable, and thats about it. Everyone else overspends their revenue.
