Chiefs Buzz | Jones, Charles run wild; Succop misfires; Grigsby honored

Chiefs Buzz | Jones, Charles run wild; Succop misfires; Grigsby honored

Running wild

The San Francisco run defense hadn’t given up more than 80 yards to a running back in its last eight games, but both Jamaal Charles and Thomas Jones surpassed 90 yards in Sunday’s rout.

Charles finished with 97 yards in 12 carries, and Jones had 95 yards in 19 carries.

The 207 total yards rushing were the most allowed by the 49ers since Dec. 26, 2004, when Buffalo racked up 226 yards in a win at San Francisco.

Succop misfires

Ryan Succop’s missed 38-yard field-goal attempt late in the second quarter marked the first time he’d failed on a kick inside 40 yards during his 19-game NFL career.

Succop, a second-year kicker from South Carolina, had been 20 for 20 inside the 40 before pushing his attempt wide right by inches on the first play after the 2-minute warning.

“I didn’t know I had never missed from inside 40 before,” Succop said. “But that was close. It looked like it went right over the top of the post, so I missed by a few inches.”

The miss snapped a streak of 15 consecutive made field goals, but Succop atoned on the final play before halftime, connecting on a 32-yarder that lifted the Chiefs to a 10-3 lead at the break.

“That was a blessing to have an opportunity to come back and make another one right after that,” he said.

Grigsby honored

Bill Grigsby, a 62-year veteran broadcaster who retired at the end of last season, was honored during a pregame ceremony. He was the play-by-play voice for Kansas City’s appearances in Super Bowl I and Super Bowl IV, a 23-7 victory against the Minnesota Vikings.

Throughout the game, some of Grigsby’s more memorable calls were blared over the public-address system.

Grigsby broadcast AFL and NFL games as well as major-league baseball and National Hockey League games during a career that spanned parts of eight decades.

Worth noting

•The 49ers scored their only touchdown on the game’s final play. But it came at a potentially high cost when wide receiver Josh Morgan, who hauled in the 12-yard TD toss, appeared to hurt his knee on the play.

•Former KU Jayhawk Moran Norris started at fullback for the 49ers.

Sunday’s inactives

Two starters — right tackle Ryan O’Callaghan and defensive end Tyson Jackson were inactive for Sunday’s game.

Cornerback Jackie Bates, fullback Mike Cox, safety Reshard Langford, linebackers Charlie Anderson and Justin Cole and defensive end Alex Magee also were inactive.

Tackle Barry Sims and wide receiver/return specialist Ted Ginn Jr. were among the 49ers’ inactive players, along with Troy Smith, who was listed as San Francisco’s third quarterback.

For about half a second I thought this meant Boomer Grigsby was honored. That was a WTF moment.
