Miami's Martin leaves team after 'emotional breakdown'

Jonathan Martin leaves Dolphins after 'breakdown'

By Dan Hanzus

An unusual situation is unfolding in Miami, where Dolphins right tackle Jonathan Martin has left the team after suffering an "emotional breakdown" this week.

NFL Media's Jeff Darlington reported Wednesday that Martin is currently seeking help with his family after an incident at the team's cafeteria, according to team sources.

Martin is listed on the team's injury report with an illness, and is doubtful to play Thursday against the Cincinnati Bengals. Fox NFL insider Jay Glazer reported that Martin was the victim of a prank at the cafeteria, becoming enraged enough to "smash his food tray on the ground."

The second-year pro has not been with the team since that time. Darlington reports that Martin immediately sought treatment at a local hospital. He has since left the hospital and is now spending time with his family, according to team sources.

Martin opened the season as the Dolphins' replacement for Jake Long at left tackle. He was moved to right tackle when the team acquired Bryant McKinnie via trade last week. Tyson Clabo is expected to start in Martin's place on Thursday.

Or maybe we can stop making excuses for a group of guys who knew a guy was suicidal and decided to break him anyway. Or the leadership on all levels who had a guy who obviously was struggling emotionally, and completely ignored it. Or the meatheads up top who see a guy whose soft and think the best solution is to toughen the guy up, instead of maybe digging to find out if there was a better way to handle the problem.

Regardless of your view on Martin, whether he belongs in the NFL or not, let's be real about something.... There is nothing excusable about the way Incognito/Pouncey and Jeff Ireland handled this. Somehow, Philbin is escaping blame in this, and I don't know how that continues either.

I don't care as much about the bullying or harassment piece, and I especially don't care about the racist comments. Except that the guys doing it knew a guy was suicidal and decided to harass him anyway. I don't know how any person can look past that.

The report speaks of Philbin in glowing terms. Quit being ridiculous.

Just because there is no smoking gun, doesn't excuse the coach that lost total control of his locker room.

But yeah, how ridiculous of me to suggest that the main leader of that locker room be held accountable for what happens inside of it.

He didn't lose total control of the locker room. In fact, he did a pretty good job of coaching in light of everything that was going on. Yeah, it is ridiculous to blame a coach for not being aware of every personal situation going on in a locker room, and instead delegating position coaches to keep him up on what's going on.

Laughable. He either knew what was going on and let it slide, or he had no idea... meanwhile, his coaches and players were openly harassing a player who was struggling both on and off the field.

The head coach's main job is to manage players. And great coaches like Bellichick know everything that happens in the locker room. I can guaran-****ing-tee you that if this happened in Bellichick's locker room, he would know about it. What you would NEVER see is a story about how this happened right underneath Bellichick's nose. You know why? Because no coach or player would have the guts to go behind Bellichick's back. Nobody.

This isn't an isolated incident. Despite Incognito's history, he was named to a leadership council. You have players publicly complaining about the offensive coordinator's playcalling. You have receivers complaining about their QB not throwing him the ball... after a win. You have an offensive line coach and an assistant trainer who are participating in harassing Jonathan Martin and others in ways that seem way outside the norm. You have players initiating their own fines, harassing players beyond what was considered normal, acting like 2-year olds. You have a culture where players, even suicidal players, apparently don't feel at all comfortable telling their head coach that this is all happening.

Do the players and position coaches report to Philbin, or does Philbin report to the players and coaches? I'm confused here. So the job of a head coach is to delegate and not have any knowledge of what the people you're managing are doing?

I finished reading the full report. Incognito is particularly honest where as most normal people (Jerry & Pouncey) would try to deny how egregious things were; I think this is mostly because Incognito has deluded himself into thinking he wasn't doing anything harmful.

It's interesting that of late this became a case about how a mentally weak person possibly couldn't cut it. In reality, it's two guys who struggle with the mental and emotional side of things. Incognito is just on the flip side of the coin as he puffs himself up in groups and targets others so hes in the group targeting people instead of being targeted. He admits he probably only got back in the league because he sought out mental health assistance in 2010 and got on Paxil. He had a couple of good years with no issues and then got in 3 altercations just over the summer of 2012. I wonder if he quit going.

I felt bad for the Nate guy. It sounds like they were really riding the **** out of him once the previous worse guy got cut from the roster. At least he got $250 bonus in the fine book for "not cracking before JMart" The Asian asst. trainer too. Guy put up a with a ton of shit and then didn't snitch probably just trying to hold onto his job but the private text he sent to Martin right after he walked out will probably do him in.

Richie Incognito Leaves/returns to Twitter

After Richie Incognito deleted his Twitter account Friday in the wake of an independent investigator's report on the Miami Dolphins locker room situation, he returned to the social media website Monday and apologized to teammate Jonathan Martin early Tuesday morning.

Embroiled in the Miami Dolphins' bullying scandal and cast as the primary tormentor of teammate Jonathan Martin, feisty offensive guard Richie Incognito lashed out on social media after Ted Wells' investigative report was released.

Now, he's deleted his official Twitter account.

"I guess I'm as dumb as I look," Incognito wrote before quitting Twitter.

He also Tweeted "stop the hate," "stop the bullying" "Pleeease Stop The Hate."

He also made fun of Martin for contemplating suicide, writing: "Bully? Or Friend" and included a link to the suicide prevention hotline. It was Incognito who days earlier had Tweeted about Martin considering suicide, which was another low blow in a series of comments about Martin and his agent, Kenny Zuckerman.
The report released Friday by attorney Ted Wells found that Incognito was one of three Dolphins starters who subjected teammate Martin to persistent harassing language and workplace bullying.

The NFLPA has said it will review the findings, and the NFL has had no comment on whether there will be further punishment.

Incognito was suspended in November for the remainder of the season and will be a free agent in March.
Incognito took to Twitter on Friday night, saying:

He then appeared to bid farewell to the social media website, saying:

Quote:
"Goodbye twitter," Incognito wrote. "Be well. See you on the other side?"
Incognito earlier greeted Twitter and apologized for his behavior in relation to the social media site.
His account was then deleted shortly thereafter, and remained so until being reactivated on Monday.

Quote:
"What's up TWITTER. Happy Monday. ... I apologize for acting like a big baby the last few days. This has all been so much on me and my family. ... I just want to play football. I want everyone to know I'm in good spirits and looking forward to playing again one day."
