Colorado get away

Long story short......

Wife & I's anniversary is coming up next month. Looking to take her away for a couple days to Colorado. I've been looking at Vail, or Estes Park, etc. Just not sure what's a good semi romantic place to go. Looking for some quiet together time, but a place with some decent food & nightlife.

Hoping some of you can give me some suggestions.

Estes Park is nice. I like Colorado Springs, but it is super close to where I am. DaFace knows lots of good places in Denver.

I've heard Vail is tremendously expensive.

From the initial looking around, Vail does seem fairly expensive.

If you like a little gambling with your getaway, Cripple Creek is quiet and won't kill the budget. Decent restaurants there as well.

Vail is expensive, but if your wife is into shopping, that's where you want to take her.

Estes Park is great. If you are a fan of The Shining, you can stay at the Stanley hotel; it was Stephen King's inspiration for The Overlook; supposedly haunted (if you believe in that sort of thing).

Estes Park is nice but there's no real nightlife to speak of. Ski towns are going to be much better for that. Vail is a good choice.

Vail is probably the place to go. I like Frisco myself, but it's a smaller town and is not going to have nightlife. Vail will have more restaurants and more entertainment.

If you want to go with amazing scenery, go to Telluride, but I'm not sure of the nightlife there, either. That's not something I ever think about.

Take a look at Breckenridge. I lived in Colorado for more than half my life, and it's my favorite mountain town.

It really just depends on what you're looking to do. Vail is a HUGE ski town this time of year, so while it's got plenty for people to keep busy who aren't skiing, you're going to be competing with the ski crowds for hotel rooms, restaurants, etc. That's why your prices are going to be sky high.

Estes Park, on the other hand, isn't going to have all of the high-end shops and such that you might find in Vail, but Estes is actually fairly quiet this time of year. You can probably find some really good deals on lodging, and most of the shops downtown are open as usual.

So, between those two, if you're looking for a quiet getaway, Estes Park is going to be your winner. If you're looking for an active mountain experience that will have tons of stuff for you to see and do, Vail is going to be more your style.

If you're looking for something kind of in between, Breckenridge is another option you might look into. It's a ski town, but smaller than Vail and (in my opinion) more quaint.

I also like Crested Butte, with a short stop in Salida on the way out. It's a nice drive from Denver. Salida isn't a mountain town but it's kind of nice, and Crested Butte is definitely a classic mountain town.

Nightlife isn't a huge deal either way. A nice restaurant or two would be more important.

I was up in Estes last year, and their downtown is almost exclusively t-shirt shops and candy stores. I have no idea how they all survive.

Vail (this time of the year) is going to cost you your first born. I agree with Estes Park (The Stanley). Absolutely beautiful up there, but there isn't much night life to speak of.

You might even consider Fort Collins. Great town (Colorado State) and the night life is really nice. Great restaurants, walking distance to everything (in the downtown area) and the people are friendly as hell. The traffic can get hectic at times, but not really a huge deal.
