Def Leppard has a long history. They were a rock band from the beginning. Their second record, which was produced by Mutt Lange, showcased their future. They fired Pete Willis after writing most of Pyromania because he was an alcoholic, which is ironic because he's still alive and Steve Clark, the other alcoholic guitarist in DL, is dead.

When they went into the studio for Hysteria, they wanted to create something epic. That record took more than 3 years to record, more than 100 vocal tracks in many songs, and is viewed by people inside the music industry as a masterpiece. The record company spent more than $5 million dollars to record that album and were rewarded with riches nearly 30 fold.

In full disclosure, I didn't like Pyromania or Hysteria at the time of their respective releases. I thought they were too electronic sounding and too phony.

Now, I view them as master works of the era. Congrats, Carlotta, for an entertaining interview!
I got my information from a documentary on the band produced by BBC. The band's management from their start through their greatest successes was interviewed and stated that Joe Elliott was the driving force of the band and most ambitious. After the success of Highn Dry he began to complain about most of his band mates , when someone would piss him off he'd want that person fired. The management just laughed it off. Sometimes you should reference beyond wikipedia.

Brittany Spears has sold a lot of records. Doesn't mean her music is good

This. I honestly wish I wasn't like this, but I pretty much can't stand any of the music I grew up on. Occasionally it's fun to listen to stuff like that in a sort of posturing reliving my youth way... But I'm constantly looking for new (to me) music instead of reliving the oldies.

For instance, I was a huge Led Zeppelin fan, but I pretty much instantly switch the station if they come on. I think they're a great band. Their music is super important. I can hardly listen to them now though.

You're misinterpreting the information.

Pete Willis WAS fired and replaced with Phil Collen because he was an alcoholic, late for rehearsals, songwriting sessions, etc. The guy sells real estate now.

Joe didn't want Rick Allen fired nor Steve Clark or Savage fired. That's complete and utter nonsense.

After Clark's death, they only wanted a British guitarist, due to their chemistry, so no American guitarists were even considered. They eventually settled on Vivian Campbell, but he's only a paid player and not a full member. The runner up is a very good friend of mine that went on to work with Alanis Morrisette for years and is now a successful producer in his own right.

And quite honestly, he's a better guitarist.

It's odd.
I heard Van Halen I/II/Fair Warning, Rush, Led Zeppelin, ACDC, Pink Floyd, Sabbath, DIO etc, coming out of my brothers' rooms for years.

I'm not tired of any of them; not sure why Def Leopard rubs me the wrong way.

Because at heart, they're a Pop band. They're not rock, they're not metal, they're not alternative and they're certainly not punk.

They're a pop band with tons of vocals and vocal harmonies.

Pop.

Yeah. All those bands are sort of on my change the station list (not Sabbath). I will say that I'm starting to enjoy exposing my kids to them now though. What kid shouldn't have to listen to his dad belt out every word to any random classic rock song that comes on the radio?

Just commenting on the info I got from the Documentary. Not nonsense. The guy really made these statements about Joe Elliott , but then again you'll probably pull out some secretary from the management company to refute this post so I'll just bow to the CP rock historian.

FTR, I'm not claiming that what you saw and what you've related is incorrect, I'm stating that the doc was incorrect.

No offense to you, personally.
