Gregg Williams to the Rams

Gregg Williams has left the Saints to go to the Rams with Fisher.

Williams is just another name in the NFL. His schemes are garbage. How many times did he overload the right side against the 49ers?

Get ready for a whole lot of blitzin and a whole lot of offensive yards Rams fans.

http://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/news?slug=ycn-10836425 Good read about it..

Now that the 2011 season is over for the New Orleans Saints, it's time to start looking ahead to next year. Perhaps the area that needs the most improvement is the Saints defense. Apparently, the players are not the only ones who may be different next year. Reportedly, Saints defensive coordinator Gregg Williams is joining the St. Louis Rams.

In my opinion, history will be kinder to Williams than Saints fans are right now. In the immediate aftermath of the Saints 36-32 playoff loss to the San Francisco 49ers, Williams is taking most of the bullets. Late in the game, Williams' defensive unit somehow allowed 49ers QB Alex Smith to lead two TD drives.

Unlike what 31 other NFL teams would have done, Williams had the Saints blitzing will a late lead. Of course, this philosophy is what brought the Saints to the dance. If Williams had played prevent, the end result may have been the same, but in a different way. However, I can't blame Saints fans for being angry at Williams right now.

Unless Williams makes derogatory comments about New Orleans at a later time (a la Jeremy Shockey) I choose to focus on the positive when it comes to everyone who helped the Saints win Super Bowl 44. I'm not saying we should be content with one Super Bowl. I'm just looking at the whole picture as a Saints fan.

Remember, the Saints defense was so bad before Williams arrived that New Orleans actually had two non-winning seasons in 2007 and 2008. I still feel that Williams was forced to blitz so much to cover for a serious lack of NFL talent at linebacker and a perplexing inability of the defensive ends to generate pressure on opposing quarterbacks.

Williams coached under Jeff Fisher for years, so it's no surprise that he would be joining the Rams new head coach. I would love to see Mike Nolan replace Williams. Remember, Mike's father Dick Nolan was the first New Orleans head coach to have an 8-8 season.

However, Sean Payton and Mickey Loomis need to get together and figure out how to improve both the talent and production of the Saints defense. Perhaps the defensive line needs a new position coach. I definitely feel the linebackers need an upgrade. A decent defense is all that is stopping the Saints from returning to the Promised Land.

Patrick Michael was born and raised in New Orleans and currently resides in the Big Easy. As such, he is a lifelong, diehard New Orleans Saints fan. His highlight as a Saints fan was experiencing the magical Super Bowl season of 2009

For people who bitch about prevent defenses with a lead, they work more times than not. When you go man to man and a team is taking risks, you open yourself up to big plays like the Saints did.

A prevent defense generally does the job because it keeps everything in front of you. Blitzing and taking risks with the game on the line is generally a good way to lose. People should remember this game the next time they bitch about a prevent defense.

Williams is essentially Gunther. What a genius game plan. Go man to man on Vernon Davis late in the game.

The love this guy gets is astounding. (sorry, Mo).

You do know, that there's a happy medium. You don't have to blitz every down at the end of the game, and you don't have to sit in prevent, right?

The problem is how often teams go into prevent with more than two minutes on the clock and a one score lead. I don't think the Saints should have gone into prevent;they should have gone into zone.

Not to mention he instructs his guys to take cheap shots. That's what he did when they won the Superbowl. Hell, he flat out said it in the press.

This is true. But the point is, coordinators have used a prevent for a REASON for years to the tune of success. When it does fail, it's not that often actually. It's just that people bitch about it when it does. It's far more safe to sit in a soft zone than to blitz and give up a big play to lose the game. Which is what happened over and over again at the end of the game.

I agree with the bold, but it is unrelated to your defense of prevent.

Then he and Fisher will get along just fine. This will easily be the dirtiest team in football.

Saints have a defense that relied purely on getting turnovers. When that doesn't happen, you tend to lose. You can't always depend on getting turnovers to win games. At some point on defense you have to be able to shut people down without turnovers.

You have to wonder if there's a lot of truth to the idea that a quick strike passing team has to be surrounded by this kind of defense. Thing is, it's not like New Orleans has a ton of talent on the defensive side. It's possible that Williams knows that this is his best shot at winning. I just remember that in Washington, he had one of the stingiest defenses in the game.

I am good with throwing as much pressure at Alex Smith as possible. It is less frustrating to loose attacking, than to just sit there and take one up the rump.
