So you are saying we should take the black Matt Stafford? Good plan.

Nah - people are flat wrong on Alex Smith. He was decent for 2 years under a shitty coach with absolute garbage talent, he was damn good for 2 years with a good coach and tolerable talent.
Alex Smith is not Matt Cassel, nowhere close. Alex Smith is a credible starting quarterback. However, 2010 is probably an accurate high-water mark. They'll go 8-8. If he's around for 5 years, they'll go 10-6 a couple of times, maybe even an 11-5 season. They'll have a couple of 7-9 years in there as well. Mostly they'll just spin their wheels, winning nothing but being competitive enough to keep the stadium full. Just like Clark likes it. Alex Smith, on his own, isn't really the problem here. It's the franchises refusal to even try to do any better.

if he is the starter in 2013 and we re-sign Bowe I think he will throw for around 4000 yards with 20-25 TD's and 12 turnovers.
Alex Smith needs to get better in the red zone. That's the real big flaw in his game. Andy Reid teams have been pretty bad in the red zone (last few years) as well so that's something that concerns me. still hoping for Geno |

3300-3500 seems reasonable for him. With a passer rating in the high 80s/low 90s and a 2.5-1 TD/INT ratio. He's not Geno so folks are losing their shit. At the same time, he's probably the best non-Geno option out there. Again, all you need to do is assume that 2 years of learning under Harbaugh as well as an extra 20 games as a starter (1/3 of his career) is enough to make him 10% better than he was as a 25 yr old under one of the 5 worst coaching staffs in the NFL. If you can accept that reasonable premise, then he's essentially exactly the QB I've described. Some folks are going to be disappointed in him (the ignorant true fans that are expecting the 100 rated passer he was in SF), some folks are going to be pleasantly surprised by him (90% of this board), but in the end he's going to make a team exactly what it is. No better. No worse. Like I said, in a vacuum he's a nice addition. He'd damn well better come with Geno as his caddy, though.

As I said in another thread, whenever you trade for a backup you are saying that someone else's "Not good enough" is good enough for you.
It shouldn't be.

If they want to ship a 4th for Smith and draft Smith #1 then I think it's a great move. If they want to take a QB in the 2nd round or move back into the 1st and take whatever QB they like then I think it's a move that I can at least give a chance. If Alex Smith is backed up by Matt Cassel, Ricky Stanzi or some scrub 5th round "project" I think it's a terrible shit move. |

I mean, we all wanted Clausen in 2010...it was Berry or Clausen at 5 and then Clausen at 36 or bust and we were PISSED when it didn't happen but it seems like THEY were right about Clausen and WE were wrong. so if the Chiefs don't think Geno is good enough and like someone as much and feel like they can get their guy and have Smith help out this 'raw' product like I said, I can keep an open mind. but if their answer to our QB position is Alex Smith and Alex Smith only my God, how terrible can this franchise be? |

This isn't some random backup, like Cassel was. Smith deserves to be a starting QB in the NFL.
Do you think he's a "franchise" QB, do you think he's good enough to win a Super Bowl, we can argue about that. He was 3 points away from getting there last year. But to say he is only a backup and isn't a starting QB in the NFL when he was rated 90+ last year and 100+ this year, when he lost his job due to injury, just makes no sense. |

And no, I don't like this move at in your intermediate scenario. Trading back into the first round is, as other have said, doubling down on stupid. Why would you give up your 2nd and 4th (plus a pick next year, I'm sure) to move up to take a QB when you should've just taken one already? Especially if you've used that first on a tackle in a draft where there's a TON of depth at the tackle position. It's just dumb. If they don't take Geno and Barkley doesn't suffer a serious slide (and he won't), then WTF is the point? Unless you've plunger raped the Eagles or someone in a trade-down scenario, it just doesn't make sense to pass on Geno. Eh, I know how this is going to go. We're going to take Joeckel in the first and I'm just not going to care what happens from there. The draft pisses me off every single season.

I'm kind of looking at the AustinChief scenario. Say the Chiefs don't like Geno. Fine. Say they can trade back a few spots, or to 10. They can take those extra picks and then move up for Barkley or whoever it is they think will fall to pick 20 or so (if it's their guy) and that's something I'm willing to give a chance to.
if the trade for Smith, draft at #1 and take any type of lineman I'm going to be ****ing pissed off. for me #1 has to be Geno, a mad reach for a WR, or trade down even if you have to trade down for less value than you could get for #1 in typical years. I'm still at Geno or bust at #1...if we trade for Alex Smith and don't plan on taking Geno at #1 we better trade down and then take a QB on or before 34. Otherwise ****. This team better host and win a playoff game and Alex Smith better do things that look like a franchise QB would do. |
