We'll see how all this plays out but if Trump's looking to both put a conservative voice on the court AND blunt some otherwise obviously pointed attacks on his nominee, Amy Barrett would be a hard choice to top.

Some people are going to look awfully petty and shitty if they want to go to the mattresses with her. Democrats are almost certainly going party-line anyway and perhaps Trump won't risk putting someone who appears to be extremely pro-life up for nomination with some R Senators that may not be willing to support her in an election cycle in more pro-choice jurisdictions.

Allison Eid may be a little more likely to slip through.

Personally I'm a huge fan of Willett but good luck trying to get another Scalia on the bench to replace Kennedy. You can try to argue that Roberts effectively replaces Kennedy as the swing vote and that Willett is just putting a reliable conservative on the bench, but you probably won't get much traction.

The whole thing will be fascinating. I would love to see a female constructionist with no real abortion track record to speak of get the gig as I'm not someone who's interested in re-litigating abortion for the rest of my life and I'm a little tired of the optics of Republicans just putting white dudes on the bench (though Bush tried with Miers and thankfully that didn't go through).

I wouldn't be so sure. Who knows how long the investigation goes on for. And they'd have to find something extremely serious linked without any doubt directly to Trump in order to get the 67 votes in the senate in order for a conviction. That would take several republicans defecting and some pretty horrific consequences like the serious threat of a second civil war in the streets

Within 4 years, I expect. I've heard that they've got it teed up already. The plan is to introduce a heartbeat bill that will protect life at that point, but that they don't want to do it until they have the court properly stacked.

What would lead you to that conclusion? Kennedy has been a fairly reliable conservative for awhile except for social issues and he was hardly dogmatic there. I don't feel like he was a 'go down with the ship' type over most social issues; they wouldn't have been enough to keep him on, IMO.

I think the guy has seen a couple Justices die on the bench and didn't want to be one of them. Rhenquist and Scalia were both younger than Kennedy is now when they passed. He's looking forward to a retirement and good for him. I'm still gobsmacked that RGB didn't do so 4 years ago.

Man, if you've held that post for 25 years and you're in your late 70s or early 80s, you've done your part. You've served your country and deserve to live the rest of your life.
