Word seems to be that 2k9 is surprisingly solid, which would make for two good hockey games this year.

NHL 08 was fantastic, and 09 is even better.

Thats because Visual Concepts made NHL. They are awesome sports developers. They are responsible for NFL2K5 and the NBA2K series.

Anyways, the Take Two/EA deal is officially dead. Thank god. This is the best thing to happen to sports gaming ever.

I harbor no illusions that I'm a halfway competent player, but in the online team game I just played, I somehow managed to score the game-tying goal with six seconds left and then got the assist on the game-winner in OT. AWESOME.

Also, the custom soundtracks take me back to NHL 2000 on the PC. There was nothing cooler than adding reverb to songs and hearing them in the arena during breaks. It's still beyond cool.

I'm loving NHL 09 as well. I have no concept of real hockey tactics, so most of my time is spent steamrolling people and calling for the puck constantly. In the 5 games I've played, I've racked up 79 "hits" on opposing players, which I'm sure is completely unrealistic and certainly uncouth, but I'm having a good time doing it.
