So: San Francisco will probably have first-, second- and four third-rounders next year. But if the Chiefs surprise, it'll more likely be a one, two twos and three threes. As we've seen, GM Trent Baalke is dangerous with extra picks in his hands. If Colin Kaepernick is very good, the Niners should be annual contenders for years with the picks laid out that way.

If he's your long term guy, you lock him up now, as it would come cheaper than if he does "set the league on fire" and you don't have to deal with a contract later.

I see it as the opposite. They wanted to have Smith so much that they were willing to give up two seconds and didn't put much protection on it. They didn't demand him to prove it in order to lose that compensation. If they thought his value was less, they would have said 10-6 to prove it.

You can question the amount and the use of leverage, but this doesn't show a low level of confidence in Smith. At the least, it shows that they were willing to give two seconds without much protection and they didn't feel they had the leverage. You can go into something with a biased perspective (that they have little confidence in Smith) and make almost any move to be indicating what you want it to. I could do the same and say that they wouldn't give up that much if they just wanted to replace him quickly.

I'm sure they would have loved to give one third rounder and call it a day, but they felt someone else would get him for that price or up to what they gave.

It's pretty apparent fans on this forum don't view him as the long-term solution. Nothing is apparent about what they think of Smith in regard to long-term other than he's not Manning. They could be having a wait-and-see approach, which is different than viewing him as not the long-term QB. They could extend him in July for all we know.

Not saying he is the long-term solution or arguing against your contention that Flynn could do, just saying that if anything, giving up more than going for Flynn (a guy Dorsey drafted) shows more commitment to Smith and thus the chances of them being open to him as a long-term solution is increased.

We don't know that. Dorsey said that they could extend him in Training Camp after seeing him play there. I know Dorsey wouldn't publicly shut down any option, but just because he has a reason doesn't mean it's out of the realm of possibility. I know you said "seems to show," so I do give you credit for not saying "it was clear."
