About $10 million too much over the life of the contract, but liveable. Certainly more liveable than $18-20 million, like the Flacco and Cutler contracts.

Yeah it is ONE year. All 18 million would have to be accounted for on the 2015 cap. Right about the time that Houston and Berry will have to be paid or lost. That number would be huge against the cap.

In fact, several of us used the "if true" caveat. It's a ****ing discussion board. Speculation is the name of the game. |

The San Francisco 49ers ultimately added five players to their roster in exchange for dealing a quarterback they no longer wanted to the Chiefs. Now it's Kansas City's turn to decide if they want Alex Smith around for the long haul. Amid word that contract negotiations with Smith's camp aren't progressing well, coach Andy Reid joined NFL Network's "NFL AM" on Tuesday to suggest that his starting signal-caller wouldn't become a free agent after this season. "Well, there's open communication between both parties. Now, I'm not in that business anymore -- that's (general manager) John Dorsey's side of it -- but there's been open communication," Reid said. "I've always believed that if there's open communication, then normally good things happen. So, I'm sure something will get done. I can't put a time frame on that, but I'm sure something will get done." Dorsey also told SiriusXM NFL Radio's Alex Marvez last week that Smith and the Chiefs were "going back and forth." "Eventually, as (with) all negotiations, there will be a medium point where both sides agree. Time will move on and we'll go to the next project," Dorsey said. "This thing will go on for a little bit. There's a degree of patience here. There's no reason to rush." Despite drafting rookie passer Aaron Murray, the Chiefs sound interested in re-signing Smith. We expect a deal to happen, but at Kansas City's pace and Kansas City's price -- not Smith's. |

I'd rather pay him 18 now and keep the next years at 15 and below. Makes a lot more sense than taking it up the ass for a longterm contract now. |

It's really not that big of a deal. We can manage that just fine for one season. |

Years 2 and 3 of a franchise tag are significant cost bumps, not cost savings, so I'm not sure where you're getting $15 million from. If he plays well enough under a franchise tag, why would you expect him to take such a big discount at that point?

Like just passing by is saying, it's a risk. Franchise him, he plays at a high level you're probably gonna have to overpay. Overpay now, he sucks, you're boned.
If he and Andy Reid are the pair and match they'd have us believe, I wouldn't have a problem locking him up |

Who said anything about tagging him the year after? If his agent is still being a bitch and Alex doesn't play up to the money in 2015, then let him walk. |

2015 17 (when he's 32) 2016 20 (when he's 33) That's a total of about 45 over 3 years...and we move on to a younger, cheaper option once he turns 34. If he blows out an acl...gets another concussion...tears his throwing shoulder a third time...or he underperformed, the cost goes down. Can ANYONE tell me why we should sign him to a long term deal at 16-19 million per year, again? |
