Cell phone and Technology Etiquette

I'm not sure if things have changed significantly in the past year or so or if I'm just becoming more aware of it lately. It seems that with more technology at our finger tips it is getting much more difficult to maintain an in person conversation.

I can understand business meetings where others have important issues to stay on top of, but if someone schedules a meeting with me, I feel obligated to give them my attention during that scheduled time and usually expect the same within reason. It's pretty tough to believe someone is being attentive if they're checking facebook or snap chat.

Lately in person conversations are tougher to have, let alone dinner. We've all seen it, 4-6 people at a restaurant table with 4-6 faces glued to phone screens instead of talking.

I read of a new "game" that I think is a great idea, at least for personal/friend meetings.

Cell Phone Roulette.

Smartphone Roulette The rules are simple:

1. When you sit down, place your phones on the table, face down. You may stack them if you'd like to be extra extreme, though this is not required.

2. Nobody is allowed to touch their phone—not even if it rings, vibrates, or chimes.

3. If you check your phone before the meal is over, you pay the entire check. No exceptions. Even if you just lift that phone ever so slightly to see who texted you. Your treat.

I've never run into anyone but I've made smartass comments to cause them issues.

Things like a lady is on the phone and is obviously being asked what she's doing or where she is....I'll say something like "Baby....come back to bed"

My brother is a professor at U of Texas and he says it's a huge problem with the students. Most of them can't pay attention for more than a few minutes and spend most of class texting or dicking around on Facebook. Then they bitch at him when their grades are poor.

As for people talking on their phones, that seems to be mostly older people. My kids' peers almost never seem to talk on their phones. They almost exclusively text.

Apparently someone had texted him and he didn't just check the flipping thing, he took the time to go ahead and text back.....granted it only took a couple of seconds, but I told him the interview was over and he need not be looking for a job offer any time soon.

Eh, seems like most of it would work itself out.

If someone is dumb enough to check their phone during an interview, they won't get the job. If someone gets a bad grade because they can't pay attention for more than 2 minutes at a time, they should be able to figure out why their grades suck. If I go out with someone who's constantly checking their phone for things that aren't urgent, I won't make them a priority.

I'm with BRC when it comes to not being able to ignore my phone... I'm not rude about it and won't check it when I'm in the middle of conversation unless it starts ringing, but I don't know why anyone would be all 'hey look at that guy glued to his phone' if I'm checking it at a hockey game or a restaurant or wherever. IT doesn't have off hours, and uh, mind your own business?

There has been one particular issue that I have just started experiencing recently and it pisses me off to no end.. people talking on their cell phones in a college library, even with the countless number of signs saying not to. When I am in the library studying for a test, writing a paper or whatever I don't want to hear someone talk on their damn phone. Yes, I could move, but that is very inconvenient for me who is actually in the library attempting to be productive. Can't people just have the common courtesy to walk outside and talk, while others are trying to work inside?

eh, DDT isn't the worst thing in the world. rachel carson used a HUGE amount of hyperbole.

While DDT is highly toxic to insects and fish and can poison other animals in large enough doses, in moderate amounts it's not especially harmful to birds and mammals, including humans. (Ironically, the EPA's own judge agreed, but was overruled by its chief administrator.) No one has conclusively proved that DDT can give you cancer. The cause of eggshell thinning is likewise poorly understood.

If you are above a Tier II tech, I think its expected that you are on call in case of a disaster or a major outage in your area of expertise. Just the way the field works. Most of the time you are not getting paid but try not answering your phone when work calls and see how long you keep your job.

I'm in business. I get that part. Very little of what I'm talking about is business related.

If I've taken Bearcat out for a business lunch to discuss a project or contract etc and he spends half of it texting his girlfriend....That's what I'm talking about. Or the people on dates or in groups who don't actually communicate because they can't take their face out of their phone.
