Mt Rushmore

For the wife and I's anniversary, we are heading up to Mt Rushmore. I figured I'd leverage the knowledge of the Planet to maximize the value of the trip.

Basically, what are the best things to do up there? (Other than see the faces) Are there any must sees?

What about places to stay? Should I try to get close, or stay in Rapid City? The stuff close there is probably unbelievably expensive, no?

What about other stuff in the area?

Any must visit places to eat? I'm a pretty big fan of food. (Yes, I know NAPA can supply me with Antifreeze)

Any advice would be appreciated.

Do it up dude. Hope you have a good time. Like I said, I strongly recommend the Lantern Inn in Hill City. Hill City is pretty centrally located and those people were crazy nice.

Hill City's nice, but I always stay at Sylvan Lake. That's my spot.

Great thread. We're heading to CO in a week and I'm wanting to run through WY and SD on the way back. I've always wanted to visit the Badlands and go through Custer SP. Thanks for all the tips fellas.
Nice to hear you had a great trip, Buehler445. I am itching to leave now.

Rainman's thread about his week in state really got me going. If I didn't have this project at work to finish, I'd be really daydreaming.

I'll have to check out the black hills sometime. My dad and brother went up there several years ago and had a great time. They liked Yellowstone better though

I thought they were going to think we were insane, but they were all for it. Then we ended up running into the same bunch on the Needles highway, and they asked for the gnome, and took of bunch of pictures of it with them and their motorcycles. It was strange, they were almost obsessed with it. Then to top it all off, it turned out they were staying in the SAME DAMN HOTEL as us in Deadwood and asked for the damn thing again. We were beginning to wonder if we were going to make it back to Omaha with it.

And someday I'm going to get back up there with my mountain bike and ride the Mickelson trail, that looks very cool.

After going through Custer SP, make sure you drive up and go through Spearfish Canyon. And see Rushmore of course.
