The thread was a good source of info. It's now been turned into a dumpster fire by two circle jerking window lickers.

Kevin Harlan said on WHB today that the B1G is definitely going to 16, and probably to 20. Says he would not have gone public with this unless he had several reliable sources that he trusted 100%. Obviously, this is not some random blogger from WV, Harlan is real, respected media.

He also said that the Big 10 would like to add Kansas, but I'm a bit skeptical about that one, he may have been playing to his audience.

edit: http://www.810whb.com/page.php?page_id=140, click on the Kevin Harlan link

Well jeez, how many viable options are left? If they really did want to go to 20, who is really out there to get that done?

Just listened to it, the "Big 10 is interested in KU" part is more lukewarm than the KU board makes it out to be. He sort of made it clear that he felt obligated to ask the Big 10 folks about Kansas, and maybe they were being kind to him, but even so his sources still mentioned a concern about whether the state of Kansas would ever let KU go without KSU.

So, the KU part is probably not a strong rumor, the only thing Harlan was adamant on is that 16 will happen, and probably 20.

KU is mind of believable, I mean they are targeting schools like UNC and Duke... Too bad they are too late and no more Big12 schools are leaving.

If the B1G is legit interested in KU... if I am KU I try to find every brilliant lawyer available to find a way to minimize the impact of the GOR and leave for the B1G.

An army of brilliant lawyers wrote it. If this is for real (I am skeptical unless they are really going to 20, and even then I don't think the KS BOR signs off), then we're probably talking long, long term, as in 10+ years from now.

The GOR was signed with Fox I believe, not the Big 12. So KU and any other conf would be dealing with Fox. Not university presidents. Now, that's really bad because Fox would crush these folks in a courtroom. However.......It's a really good thing if Fox wants to swap out KU from one of their conferences to another, in which case they wouldn't care to waive the GOR.

And a swap would vindicate anyone who's said football trumps basketball in terms of TV audiences..

You think wrong. The conference owns the rights, and fox, along with ESPN, pay the Big XII a nice sum of cash to use said rights and broadcast games. Here is a basic explanation of the granting of rights provided by KU's own sports site (edit...not sure if this website is officially part of KU or not):

http://www2.kusports.com/news/2012/d...ement-and-why/

Quote:
In its most basic form, the Grant of Rights agreement is written permission by the 10 members of the Big 12 Conference to hand over control of their television rights to the conference for the agreed-upon term of 13 years. The agreement pertains only to the Tier 1 (ESPN/ABC and FOX national games) and Tier 2 (ESPN or FOX regional games) rights and does not include Tier 3 rights, which include endeavors such as The Longhorn Network, Jayhawk Network or any other broadcast produced by the individual schools.
Fox has no power to release any university from its obligations to the Big 12. Can Fox exert influence? Sure, they have enough money at stake that the powers that be in the Big XII would at least listen, but at the end of the day, the GOR gives the Big XII the control over the Tier 1 and Tier 2 media rights.
