2012 Kansas City Royals Repository Thread

2012 Slogan: Our Time

A better, more accurate 2012 Slogan: It is Finally Next Year
(from Great Expectations)

An alternative slogan if you don't like that one: Someone has to win this crappy division
(from alnorth)

With the beginning of a new year, it is time for the 2012 version of the Royals Repository Thread. We've got Hosmer, we've got a 2011-dominating Gordon, we've got Moose, we've got hopefully a killer bullpen, we've got a stereotypical slow slugging DH, we've got easily one of the best defensive shortstops in the AL, we've got a promising catcher in Salvador Perez. Hell, we've got offense and promising prospects galore.

We do not have starting pitching.

Oh yeah, we've also got this:

Get ready for, (as of January 2012 anyway), one of the most confusing puzzles of a baseball season in recent Royals history. Will they suck? Maybe, I don't know. Will we be given a year of 0.500 baseball? Possibly, I don't know. Will they win the division and go to the playoffs for the first time in 27 years? For the first time in a long time, it could happen, I don't know. 92 losses, 92 wins, or anything in between would not surprise a lot of us.

Everything goes here except Gameday threads and really big news. If a giant story breaks, the Royals achieve some awesome milestone, or we sign/lose a highly significant player/coach/mascot/whatever, then it might also deserve its own thread. This being Chiefs Planet, please do not clutter the board with new threads about trivial Royals news or you will only annoy those who come here for just Chiefs football. If you aren't sure and its not a Gameday thread, it goes here.

What sort of stuff often goes here? SPchief explained it well, so I'll just copy that:

If you locate something of interest.. ANYTHING.. deals on apparel, best ways in/out of the stadium, giveaways, great stories from this season or from seasons gone by, rumors, trades, anything.... feel free to post it here.

LOL @ the thought of us getting name value in free agency. Love the sentiment, but it won't happen.

Teams like the Rays, Tigers, Blue Jays, or Red Sox will scoop those dudes up before we even get a half assed offer on ht etable.

Santana isn't that good anyway. He's a big name because he HAD great potential but he's rarely lived up to it. I imagine he'd just be another guy we'd get excited about just to be let down. We as Royals fans get excited about picking up scraps... and I get that. It's how we're conditioned.

Santana is the guy who was once thought to be a rising star, now he could be a Royal because he really isn't a rising or any other kind of star.

Well we just have to go by what has been said which is we have saved money and the payroll will be raised and we will go after pitching. Also, both guys are having down years, bit for different reasons. Haren has battled injury and Santana has been up and down Hoch style, although that's not really his history. I know that's optimistic at the moment but that's all we have right now.

He didn't live up to the hype but he is still decent. Prior to this season he had three of the past four seasons with a sub 4 ERA including a 3.38 and 3.49. He would be a good option. That said, I would prefer Dan Haren of the two. He has been consistently a number 2 starter and fringe number 1 in his career. He also eats a lot of innings in the process. I see him as a potential Gil Meche part two.

And it's sad that that's all we have right now. Signing a guy everyone knows doesn't equal a good signing and it's easy to get caught up in "the name." I don't personally think we need or want another Hoch. If we signed him of course I'd root for him because he'd be wearing the right uniform, I just wouldn't expect a lot.

I'm not saying getting Santana would be the worst thing we've ever done but I'd have my expectations tempered.

I'm in a bad place as a Royals fan. I've loved this team for so long and remember the glory days vividly and all I want from a sports fan standpoint is to have those days again. Maybe I don't trust anything they do anymore. Maybe my overly believing homer has turned to overly pessimistic after "our time" has turned into crap time again. I'm just tired of getting my hopes up for nothing right now. I'll get over it like I always do.

I think my disdain for this season is held back because of Paulino and Duffy going down. We knew starting pitching would be our weak spot and that was with those two in the rotation. I just can't help but to remain optimistic. This season sucks but if we can get rid of Frenchy and Yuni that will really help ease the pain.

Seriously. This lineup will be stacked next year if:
1) Hosmer figures it out.
2) Frenchy and Yuni are no longer in the lineup.
3) Myers and Gio/Falu take their places.

I do think we are going to trade Gio or we are waiting to see if we can trade Yuni prior to calling him up. It has to be one or the other, right?

I salute you for your optimism. Good for you. Paulino and Duffy an Soria are valid points in this years fail. I want that optimism back and I'm sure it will come once some moves are made. Then I'll be all in again.

A Cards fan I work with who is usually a prick told me today he thinks Yost has to go because the Royals have way too much talent to be losing. I reminded him about the injurys but pretty much agreed on Yost... and I used to like Yost. Point is, this Cards fan is even disappointed by our play. He used to live in Sedalia and follows the Royals still and would like to see both MO teams be competitve. It's probably the first time I've appreciated his opinion.

You lost me at Cards fan, most of them I know think Frenchy is one of our better players.
