Chiefs Chiefs' Player Jevon Belcher involved in murder-suicide, shoots self at Arrowhead - Page 116

edit: Sources say the player is Jovan Belcher. Police have yet to confirm.

An unnamed Kansas City Chiefs player has committed suicide at the team facility and authorities are on the scene, the police confirmed to ESPN on Saturday morning.

Local reports say police are operating with the belief the player fatally shot his girlfriend at a house before driving to Arrowhead Stadium and killing himself at around 8 a.m local time. The Associated Press reported the player's age to be 25.

"We can confirm that there was an incident at Arrowhead earlier this morning," the Chiefs said in a statement. "We are cooperating with authorities in their investigation."

There were no other injuries at the team facility, police said.

The Chiefs (1-10) were preparing to host the Carolina Panthers on Sunday.

The NFL has told the Panthers to travel as planned to Kansas City on Saturday, the Charlotte Observer has reported, citing interim general manager Brandon Beane.

That said, weather is far different than murder.

C'mon Dane. You used the "moved to Tuesday rather than Monday" as evidence that ESPN has a contractual hold on Monday night that can't be joined by another game on another network. That's now bullshit, so you're (characteristically) shifting the goalposts.

Maybe you shouldn't trust your failing memory as the basis for such certainty.

Vikes-Eagles postponed until Tuesday

From the advertisers' perspective, why does it matter if weather is different than murder? Supposing the NFL had done the Chiefs-Panthers reschedule, the advert contract would still be breached due to an unforeseeable circumstance not contemplated by the parties (the advertisers and the tv channels): the situation being the NFL postpones a game because of a murder-suicide involving one of the players in that game. As anyone who has taken a first year law course in Contracts can tell you, breaches due to material, unforeseeable circumstances are valid excuses for nonperformance.

I get that this may tend towards why there should be a game, but I don't see why the contracts compel the game.

They do own contractual rights. Also, keep in mind that the NFL signed a $1.9 billion dollar deal with ESPN in 2011 to broadcast MNF each year, so what happened earlier to that deal is somewhat irrelevant with that much money at stake.

That said, I don't see any incentive for the NFL to move the Chiefs-Carolina game to Monday or Tuesday because of the actions of a murderer.

Fox will carry the postponed Vikings game, which will be played in Detroit Monday starting at 7 p.m. ET. For contractual reasons meant to protect ESPN's Monday Night Football, the Giants-Vikings games will only be shown in the teams' home markets. To replace the postponed Viking game at 1 p.m. ET today, the New York and Twin Cities will get Green Bay-Detroit on Fox.
