Off Season Lets Talk Guns

Been a while since we had a guns n' ammo discussion.

Some of you are AR shooters Im sure. Im looking at a Colt 6920. Will be my first AR. Picked up a Glock this fall and really enjoy shooting it. Any feedback on that weapon?

Anyone else been in a buy/sell/trade mood with hardware?

At first, Nightforce was the obvious choice. They have a 42x Benchrest model that I can get for a little over 1400.

I came across SWFA, and they have an awesome scope for around the same price.

Then, I started looking at Vortex. They have some nice scopes, and the basic Viper 20x can be had for $459.

How much magnification does one need?

Do I need FFP or second?

I finally said **** it, I need to do a test. I used one of my Redfield Revenge 18x scopes to see if I can resolve a 1+ mile target. I could easily make out a 15" target. I regularly use the cheap Redfield to consistantly hit 1000 yard balloons with my AR-10.

I am chasing my tail. **** me.

If I can see it I can shoot it, I don't need a Mega scope to hit targets like a lot of wallet-warriors need.

Shipping around $19. Never had a problem with this company. If I had the funds I would jump on this.

Looking to purchase my first rifle. I've always wanted to go deer hunting, but couldn't afford a gun for myself. My first buck I shoot I want it to be from my gun. Silly I know.

What is a good recommendation for a rifle. Good price range.

you can get a real, real nice used rifle in a plethora of calibers (yes, I said plethora). You can go with the old stand by 30.06 or .308 or you can go with a more "exotic" caliber like a 270 or a 300 WSM, both a great hunting rounds. You can go 7mm, that's a heck of a round too. You can go big with a .338. There's all sorts of options. If cost is an issue a more traditional round like .30.06 is probably best.

This might sound crazy, but here, I'd tell you to go to Walmart and pick up one of the all black synthetic stalked Remington 700s in .243 or .270. These are cheap ass guns that are a great bang for the buck. Some of them are very accurate for their price range. If you enjoy hunting you'll always have a gun that doesn't need to be treated nice and you can rattle can a camo on it when the finish fades while keeping the higher end guns you'll add along the way in better shape.

great suggestion, I forgot about the .243. But a black synthetic stock, bolt action rifle should be affordable.

243 gives you the ability to hunt many types of animals from prairie dogs to deer. Very versatile caliber. 25/06 is another round I love for this reason

I agree on the .243, though I don't own one myself. I only hunt once a year, and it's pretty wooded so my trusty 30-30 works great. No big kick and tons of knock down power. It's a pretty affordable round, but you will not have much success over 150 yards. Still, a great gun for the bush and pretty affordable. I bought the Marlin because the Winchester was more expensive and a lot lighter...felt like a bb gun to me. Henry makes a good one as well I'm told.

The .243 is a great option for versatility and they are cheap. Mossberg makes a rifle in that and many other calibers that WalMart sells. I think it's the ATR model...under 400.00 easily.

I like the .243 a lot. If you can find a Remington 798 in that caliber you should be set. These were basically new Mausers made by Zastava (located in what's now Serbia IIRC) but sold here in the US under the Remington brand for a few years. I have one, and as noted, like it a lot. Keep an eye peeled but don't wait around for one of these to fall in your lap. Any nice .243 that suits you will be fine. One thing - since you'll be hunting deer with it, be sure you buy some of the 'heavier' .243 ammo - they sell ammo with lead bullet portion that weighs 40 grains or 95 grains or more. I want the heavier stuff for deer sized critters.

If you run across any 6.5x55 'Swedish' rifles, they make excellent deer rifles too. Ammo is easy to find now, they sold thousands of these Swedes here in the US after the Swedish army retired them. You can buy new rifles in the caliber - I have a CZ as well as some of the surplus Swedish guns. Real nice to shoot, won't beat you up and have excellent 'punch' downrange. Put one on your wish list.

Has anyone ever dealt with "Tactical Simulation Solutions" in the KC area? They're based in Olathe and have their range/classes in Independence. They're offering a deal for concealed-carry classes - http://www.sweetjack.com/local/deal/...tion-solutions - $59 for a certified 8 hour course ($125 value) - and I'm seriously considering it.

They're legit. The guy that owns Tactical Simulation Solutions happens to be an old family friend.

I want to take the CC class, but just don't have the time right now.
