Something is obviously stopping him from firing him. Either he likes him and thinks he can still serve purpose or the buyout is large and the contract is iron clad.

Clark can get around that by getting Pioli's signature on these decisions. That's no problem.

However, it has to be a somewhat awkward situation for Dr. Evil. Honestly, I don't know why he hasn't just said, to hell with it and resigned. I cannot imagine the type of person who would tolerate what's going on here ... from power monger to pussified mealybug in one fell swoop.

Whether or not you like the Tampa 2 or 4-3, his success factor alone is something you may want to consider or open up to. The guy is as good as they come. Having an established def coordinator like this is a must for an offensive minded coach.

*I do not want to see shades of Dick Vermeil all over again. All offense and no defense. Hiring an establish def coordinator is equally as important as an offensive minded coach. I'd like to see balance and stability on both sides of the ball. What better people to have than Kiffin and Reid. Not only are they successful but they are consistent.

Tampa 2 or 4-3, who really cares? If what Kiffin does works and he is a master at it, then I'm taking that anyday week.
The Tampa 2 is as outdated as Romeo's "bend and then break" 3-4. His defenses have been absolute dog shit the last few years.

I'd say he thinks he can stick around long enough or do enough to weasel his way back into power.

Guys with personalities like that, it's basically all they are about.

Agree but there could be 15mm reasons he might eat his own shit for 2 or 3 more seasons.... I know I would. I hope Clark makes him beg to accePt his resignation

So are you people saying that Kiffin is too old and the game has passed him by? Never thought of that.

One thing to monitor on Reid/KC ... Scott Pioli has final say written into his contract. So if he somehow survives, deal might be redone.
And that right there is how you let a big fish off the hook.

Herm: When Pioli was hired, there was no evaluation done of Edwards. Clear from the start that the two wouldn't/couldn't work together.

So there goes that whole theory.

I'd imagine the "Pioli" business would have happened pretty early in talks with Reid.

Surely that's been ironed out.

#1 - the personnel transition isn't worth it. DJ isn't the kind of Mike backer you want, so you'd have to hire an absolute stud. They'd have to find two not just okay, but elite Defensive Tackles which are difficult to find. They'd have to get another speedy outside linebacker (DJ would likely move back to OLB). And your safeties have to be elite -- they'd have to get a new one of those too.

And all to run a defense that is kind of like Romeo's -- still effective, but becoming obsolete. The traditional Tampa 2 has evolved, because spread teams can expose the scheme by spreading people way out. New Tampa 2 teams rely more heavily on blitzes to create pressure. Kiffin's scheme isn't going to be as effective as it was in the glory days.

Go for a guy with a more modern defense. More importantly, rather than force-fit a scheme, find a DC who knows how to make the scheme adapt to the players. It's the difference between hiring a guy who will sledgehammer your defense and rebuild, to a a guy who can make an effective scheme just by adding a few new pieces.

And yet he was on the staff for 3 weeks after Pioli was fired.

This information just bolsters the idea that people are over-reacting to the fact that Pioli hasn't been fired yet.

Nah ... things wouldn't have gotten this far had Pioli and his stupid contract represented any sort of legal obstacle in terms of bringing in a coach who demands player personnel control.

It isn't that ... can't be. It has to be some other reason. I wish I had a copy of Pioli's deal in my hands so I could figure this out. It's very puzzling.
