I saw something crazy today (woman driver)

Well, my boss and I were leaving a meeting in KCK today and were loading the car up, when we heard a crazy "crunch" noise.

We looked up and saw a construction pick-up with a flat trailer drive by, and figured it was a bump in the road or something.

Now the car is loaded up, and we see a cop who happens to be driving by flip his lights on and pull a u-turn, but no siren. Then he stops about 50 yards down the road, which seemed odd, since he didn't pull anyone over.

My boss goes back inside to take a leak, and as he's gone, a firetruck and ambulance drive by, sirens blaring, and stop by the cop car.. Now I know something is up.

We get in the car, and start driving down the road. I'm looking to see what happened and still don't see a car.

Then I see that they are at the entrance of a parking garage.

And then I see that the garage entrance and exit are blocked by huge chunk of concrete.

Then I see that a light pole is knocked over and laying in the grass.

Then I see a missing piece of concrete from the second story of the parking garage (which happens to be the top level).

Then ...

There is a Rav4 smooshed between a tree and the garage itself, sideways.

It seems the woman drove off the top of the parking garage, knocking the cement wall to the street below, in mid-air hit a light pole, knocking it to the ground, then fell between a tree and the wall of the garage.

My boss and I figured that she probably hit the gas while she was in drive instead of being in reverse.

Holy effing shit. Never seen anything like it.

It's hard to imagine places worse than this. If there are, god help the people that live there.

When I think about the places I've lived as a driver, I would rank them like this, from top to bottom.

1. Rolla, Missouri - Tops, but it's not really fair since this is a small town. There wasn't enough traffic to generate a lot of hostility. I guess the drag races at stop lights were the biggest problem.
2. Denver - People are generally pretty decent drivers here. We certainly have idiots, but less than other places I've been. The primary fault here is red light runners, but I think that's toned down over the years for some reason. I suspect that we have more drunk drivers than average, but that's not usually happening in the areas where I live.
3. Austin - The primary fault of Austin drivers when I lived there was just driving bat-out-of-hell fast. People were generally polite and they didn't drive erratically, but they drove like unguided missiles.
4. St. Louis - Worst driving environment. It wasn't so much fast or dangerous, but it was mean-spirited. If you were trying to change lanes, people wouldn't let you in, and they would box you off in a way that seemed intentional. I really didn't enjoy driving in St. Louis.

Granted, these are probably skewed by where I lived in these cities. In St. Louis I commuted right in the thick of a badly congested multi-lane highway, whereas in Denver I drive very little, and usually in a more laid back grid of streets. So that may bias my judgments.
