More people have died in schools than military service members in 2018: report

Quote:
A new analysis by The Washington Post found that more people have been killed at schools so far in 2018 than have been killed while serving in the U.S. military, based on data from Defense Department news releases.

After the shooting deaths of 10 people at a Texas high school on Friday, the newspaper’s database has recorded 29 deaths in 16 different incidents in the U.S. as of Friday.

Since the publication of the Post’s article, the death toll has risen to 10 people.

During the same time period, according to Defense Department data, only 13 service member fatalities were recorded in seven incidents.
Seven of those fatalities occurred during a helicopter crash in Iraq this March. Three military casualties were not related to combat.

The Post, however, does not suggest that schools are more dangerous than combat zones. According to more recent data compiled from each of the military branches' websites, there have been more people killed while serving than in school shootings.

Still, last year, the number of fatalities was significantly greater than the number of people killed in school shootings, the paper reported.

This, in part, is because of February's mass shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Fla., that left 17 people dead.

The Post noted that there are more than 50 million students in public schools but only 1.3 million members of the armed forces. Service members are still about 17 times more likely to be killed than someone in a school shooting.

Yet, we don't hear about the shootings where kids were saved. There was another shooting this or last week, where a school resource officer shot the culprit saving lives. This will help, without infringing rights, but the left opposes it.

Looks like a lot of copycat shootings now with all the press it's getting.

I'd rather not hear about any shootings, and hoping that somebody is a hero and will successfully take down an active shooter who is often armed with a military grade weapon, body armor, and / or homemade explosives seems like a bad counter strategy.

If you want to have an honest discussion about this then stop using disingenuous terminology and blatant lies.

Does an AR-15 qualify as a military grade weapon to you? If not, what term do you prefer?

I'm not sure "military grade" is a meaningful category, but if it is, it should be limited to weapons that are actually used by the military.

How about semi-automatic rifle?

Listo is right. Gun owners feelings get hurt when you use the wrong terminology to describe their "tool". We need to be more considerate if we want to have this discussion.

If you wish to discuss only AR-15's then by all means use that term. If you want to discuss firearms used in homicides then use 'firearms' and we'll all understand what you mean.

A lot more of these school shootings have been of the AR-15 variety and that's what I was referencing. I didn't suggest that all or most of them are, but it's not at all rare, and in those cases teachers and security guards are going to be outmatched.

Depends on the staff. An AR-15 isn't like some kind of magic death wand that no one can stand against. Of course it helps if the cops don't run away like cowardly pieces of shit when it hits the fan.

yesterday didnt fit the media/left's narrative (38 and shotgun).....and notice how they rarely speak about the "bombs" he made/left at the location.

My humble plan to reduce these:

1. (most important) STOP flipping saying the name(s) of the shooters. Those people started the day as a nobody, they should end the day as a nobody.

2. Secure entrances to schools with armed officers/officials - and if need be - metal detectors

3. If you want to pour money into this - pour it into studies that analyze the effects of antidepressants on our youth. (of course, this probably wont happen, given the billions big pharma donates to our politicians)

4. Stop the nonsense talk about the type of weapon - as it doesnt flippin' matter. There's an epidemic in this country with our youth and their minds......let's deal with the root-cause, not the tools they choose to be destructive.

OP's article is extremely flawed, or at least he portion the dipshit posted.

https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/...=.d8eccb5208c3

From this one on the same topic:

"The figures for 2018 do not suggest schools are more dangerous than combat zones. After all, there are more than 50 million students in public elementary and high schools and only about 1.3 million members of the armed forces. So far in 2018, a member of the military has been about 40 times as likely to be killed as someone is to die in a school shooting, including Keller’s revised figures."

By the idiot liberals logic here, stay the hell out of Chicago as you are far more likely to be murdered there than die in the military.
